Christ School blitzes Providence Day at the Lynch
There’s going to be a new large-class N.C. private school state champion this year, but that may only be because Arden’s Christ School won’t be playing.
The Greenies, who beat Providence Day 69-55 at the George Lynch Invitational at Myers Park High on Friday, certainly look capable of winning a fourth straight state championship this season.
But in July, the Greenies accepted an invitation to play in the Nike Youth Basketball (EYBL) Scholastic Conference for the next two seasons. Last season, the 14-team league included national powers like Montverde (Fl) Academy and Oak Hill (VA).
Playing in the Nike league will take the Greenies out of NCISAA state championship play and a chance for a 10th state title in the past 20 years.
Christ School won five 3A state championships in a row from 2007-11 and has won the past three.
Friday night, the Greenies certainly looked capable of another state title run, handling a Providence Day team ranked in the preseason Sweet 16 poll.
Christ School led 20-12 after the first quarter and was up 17 at halftime.
Kingston Whitty had 20 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists for the Greenies. Dacen Petty (17 points, three rebounds, three steals) and Tyler Jones (15 points, two rebounds) also played well.
Providence Day (0-3) got 12 points, 10 rebounds from Deuce Haynes and 11 points, five rebounds and two assists from Columbus Parker, son of Johnson C. Smith legend Chris “Green Light” Parker.
