Second son of former UNC star Antawn Jamison beginning to shine at Myers Park

Myers Park’s basketball team might have had lots of changes in the offseason.

But a familiar name returned “home” and helped the Mustangs to their first win of the 2025-26 season as Myers Park capped the George Lynch Phenom Hoops Classic on its home court with a convincing 87-51 win over Olympic on Saturday night.

One of the new players for the Mustangs is sophomore Rucker Jamison, who transferred to Myers Park after starting his high school career at Huntersville’s Ambassador Christian.

The son of former Providence High, University of North Carolina and NBA basketball star Antawn Jamison, Rucker Jamison also is the younger brother of 2025 Myers Park graduate A.J. Jamison. A.J. Jamison was a senior starter last year for Myers Park’s 17-13 Southwestern 4A Conference title team that advanced to the fourth round of the state playoffs.

In the offseason, Andrew Glover resigned as head coach and former Mustangs assistant junior varsity coach Dorionte “Dory” Hines was promoted. Hines had previously been a head coach at NCAA Division II Mount Olive.

Additionally, only five players and one starter (sophomore Ayo Awosanya) returned from last year’s team.

Rucker Jamison is one of two highly rated players to join the Mustangs’ program as Thomas Vickery left Christ School after winning an N.C. Independent School Athletic Association state title a year ago. Rucker Jamison is rated No. 121 by Phenom Hoops for the Class of ‘28 and Vickery is No. 99 in the Class of ‘27.

“It’s closer to home,” Rucker Jamison said of his August decision to attend Myers Park and not return to Ambassador Christian.

His father said he let his son follow his heart.

“I appreciate (Ambassador Christian assistant coach Nick Jones) and (head coach Scott Taylor),” Antawn Jamison said. “They taught him a lot. (Rucker Jamison) just said that it felt right to be here at Myers Park. He knows a lot of students here, and he has a great rapport with the coach.

“As a dad, I’m just happy for him. I just want to see him have fun.”

Rucker Jamison and all of his teammates certainly had fun Saturday night.

Two reserve returnees, Cash Hall and Mack Walters, combined for 38 points and 11 3-pointers as Hall had 21 points on six 3-pointers and three free throws after being fouled on another 3-point try. Walters had 17 points with five 3-pointers. Awosanya added 17 points and Vickery 11 for Myers Park.

Even with a 1-2 record following losses to highly touted Chambers and Davidson Day to open the season, Rucker Jamison is emphatic about this year’s goal for the Mustangs.

“Win a state championship,” he said. Olympic 11 12 19 9 — 51 Myers Park 23 24 32 8 — 87 OLYMPIC (0-3): Hadley 2, Ross 9, Jaden Hardnett 18, Givens 3, Cota 5, Smiley 3, Gibbs 4, Wilson 3, Kearney 4.
