Charlotte Latin fell behind early against one of the top prep boys’ basketball teams in South Carolina on Tuesday night.

Fort Mill, ranked No. 2 in the Palmetto State, posted a 71-50 win against the Hawks, using a run in the second quarter to build a big lead against the south Charlotte school.

Sophomore point guard Jermier Nelson scored 19 points to lead the way for the Yellow Jackets, who won their third consecutive game. Senior guard Wallace Campbell poured in 18 points, and senior shooting guard AJ Washington had 17 points.

“It makes us real hard to guard when all three of them are up toward the 20s,” Fort Mill head coach Myron Lowery said. “And our other guys are going to start getting really good looks because of them. George (Stewart, senior shooting guard) stepped up real good (Tuesday) and had 11 points. We’ve got three No. 1 guys — they’re No. 1's, all three of them — they all have different skill sets and can put the ball in the basket.”

Washington slammed home a dunk during the second quarter that gave the Yellow Jackets (3-0) a seven-point advantage.

Freshman guard Emory Cheney scored 19 points to lead the Hawks (2-2), who trailed 37-27 at halftime.

Campbell came up huge on both ends throughout the game, and Nelson knocked down a big 3-pointer in the corner that maintained Fort Mill’s double-digit lead in the third quarter. Nelson hit a deep 3-pointer to beat the buzzer at the conclusion of the period.

The Yellow Jackets led by 19 points entering the fourth quarter.
