12 new teams join NC statewide girls’ high school basketball rankings

The first N.C. high school girls’ basketball polls of the season include a lot of changes.

There are 12 new teams ranked and there are two new No. 1 teams among the nine polls.

Mallard Creek (3-0) moves up a spot to No. 1 in the 8A poll. South Caldwell (3-0) is the new No. 1 in 6A.

Elsewhere:

— There are new teams in the NCISAA poll: No. 4 Gaston Christian (5-0); No. 7 Greensboro Day (4-2); and No. 8 Cary Academy (6-0).

— In the NCHSAA 1A poll, there are three new teams: No. 3 Uwharrie Charter (4-0); No. 7 North East Carolina Prep (2-0); and No. 8 College Prep & Leadership Academy (3-0).

— Three polls only added one new team: Gastonia Highland Tech (2-0), joined 2A. Bessemer City (2-0) is in 3A. And North Johnston (3-0) is in 4A.

— There are five new teams in the 6A poll: No. 1 South Caldwell (3-0); No. 2 Alexander Central (3-0); No. 6 Westover (3-0); No. 7 Western Guilford (2-0); and No. 8 Southeast Guilford (3-1).

— Five of the eight teams in the 8A poll are new: No. 3 Leesville Road (3-0); No. 4 Willow Spring (2-0); No. 5 Heritage (3-1); No. 6 Millbrook (1-0); and No. 7 Broughton (3-1).

The polls are sponsored by The Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer of Raleigh. The rankings are compiled by longtime N.C. girls’ basketball expert Randall Clark, a co-host of The Observer’s Talking Preps streaming show.
