  • The Charlotte Observer and News & Observer release updated statewide rankings.
  • Randall Clark compiles polls across NC; 11 teams enter and three swap No.1.
  • Mallard Creek at McDowell headlines midweek matchup, a statewide marquee test.

After the first big week of N.C. girls’ basketball, there are 11 new teams in the statewide high school basketball rankings.

The rankings are sponsored by The Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer of Raleigh and are compiled by longtime girls’ basketball expert Randall Clark, a co-host of The Charlotte Observer’s Talking Preps streaming show.

In addition to the new teams, three of the nine polls have new No. 1 schools:

— In 3A, Mountain Heritage (2-0) moved up one spot to No. 1. Former No. 1 Goldsboro (2-1) fell to second.

— In 5A, Southeast Alamance moved up three spots to No. 1. Former No. 1 North Lincoln (1-2) fell to No. 8.

— And in 6A, Alexander Central moved up one spot to No. 1. Former No. 1 South Caldwell (4-1) dropped two spots to third.

— Finally, the game of the week, and maybe the game of the year so far, is Wednesday in Marion. Mallard Creek, the No. 1 ranked 8A school, will play at McDowell, the No. 1 ranked 7A school and a regional championship finalist a year ago.
