Friday’s girls’ rewind: North Meck, Providence Day, Stuart Cramer among winners

Two big games are on tap for Saturday. Here’s a short preview of those games, and also Friday night’s girls’ basketball recaps, featuring big wins for North Mecklenburg, Providence Day and others.

Saturday’s feature games

(Girls) Providence Day (6-1) at Durham Academy (5-2), noon – Durham Academy faces Charlotte Latin on Friday night, then meets the Chargers at midday Saturday. Ginny Anne Dumont continues to lead Providence Day. She had 19 points Tuesday in the Chargers’ 58-39 victory over High Point Wesleyan.

(Girls) South Mecklenburg (4-1) vs. South Pointe (1-1), in the Border Battle at Clover (SC) High, 6:30 p.m. – The Sabres get a chance to make a statement against one of South Carolina’s top girls’ teams. South Pointe freshmen Ja’Nyia Cunningham (28 ppg, 11.7 rpg) and Kaleigh Lucas (14.3 ppg, 5.3 apg) are a dynamic duo, but the Stallions have a strong supporting cast. South Mecklenburg counters with NyKira Arrington, who had a triple-double (12 points, 10 rebounds, 10 steals) in the Sabres’ recent 63-48 victory over Charlotte Country Day.

Friday’s #BIG5 girls’ top performers

Janiya Boyd, Monroe: In a 70-37 win over Pageland Central (SC), Boyd had 36 points, six rebounds and three assists. Teammate Deianna Walters finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Lanie Edwards, Charlotte Latin: In a 41-30 win over Durham Academy, Edwards had a team-high 22 points.

Ma-Kaela Gidney, Hickory Ridge: In a 75-10 win over Jay M. Robinson, Gidney had 28 points and 11 steals.

Oshauna Holland, Stuart Cramer: Holland had a game-high 30 points in a 64-26 win over North Gaston.

Autumn Washington, Ardrey Kell: In a 69-48 win over Nation Ford, Washington had a game-high 23 points.
