A complete team effort powered the Charlotte Catholic boys basketball team by Kings Mountain, 70-52, during the State Farm Classic at Ardrey Kell High School on Friday night.

A trio of Cougars players logged 10 or more points, led by Jack Siegel’s game-high 21 points in what was Charlotte Catholic’s fifth win of the year. The Cougars, which defeated Nation Ford in Game 1 of the State Farm Classic on Thursday night, started Friday’s game on a 9-2 run highlighted by four Jack Siegel points and a Mack Jordan 3-pointer.

They never trailed through all 32 minutes of action.

“After last Saturday’s loss, we really focused in on our defensive effort,” Cougars head coach Mike King said. “We really focused in on contesting every shot, and I think the guys these last two days really did a good job.

“I think [Joseph Kapsiak] has done a fantastic job. And then we rebounded the basketball. The guys are really buying in. So we focused on the defensive side.”

Kings Mountain (1-2) made a charge toward the end of the first quarter as it cut the lead to 15-14, but an 8-0 run to start the second erased the Mountaineers’ momentum and Charlotte Catholic eventually took a 34-22 advantage into the locker room.

Another run from Kings Mountain came late in the third, this time the Mountaineers cutting a 14-point deficit (41-27) in half with an extended 16-9 run. Once again it was Charlotte Catholic responding, rattling off six straight points and putting the game out of reach.

To go along with Siegel’s scoring, Kapsiak added 19 points for the Cougars while Mack Jordan tossed in 16 and Luke Woeste chipped in nine, including a powerful dunk in transition.

Kings Mountain was led by Christian Hill’s 19 points. Charlotte Catholic made it a point to try and shut down Mountaineers star Caleb Nixon after his 30-point outing earlier this season, and after a quiet first half he fought through the Cougars’ physical defense for 16 points on the night.

Charlotte Christian (5-1) next plays Tuesday against South Mecklenburg. Kings Mountain also returns to action Tuesday against Lake Norman.
