Four new teams join The Observer’s Sweet 16 high school basketball polls
With conference play about to get underway for many teams this week, four new schools join The Charlotte Observer’s Sweet 16 boys’ and girls’ high school basketball polls.
The Observer has run the polls since 1984, and they include the top teams in the newspaper’s coverage area, which currently includes NCHSAA and NCISAA teams in Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln and Union counties.
The winners at the end of the season will each get a large banner to hang in its gymnasium.
The rankings are put together by longtime N.C. high school basketball experts Rick Lewis and Randall Clark, who are co-hosts of The Observer’s streaming Talking Preps show.
This week, two new boys’ teams join the rankings: 4-1 J.M. Robinson at No. 12 and 5-1 Charlotte Catholic at No. 16.
There are also two new girls’ teams: No. 12 Northwest Cabarrus (3-0) and No. 13 North Iredell (2-0).
