  • Oak Hill leveraged L.J. Smith’s 29 points and frontcourt size to win 82-72.
  • West Charlotte’s young core rallied late, dropped first loss and stand 6-1.
  • L.J. Smith, Ohio State commit, headlines homecoming and returns to Lincolnton.

Homecoming was a theme when national power Oak Hill, Va. Academy visited West Charlotte on Friday night at Charles McCullough Gymnasium.

Oak Hill junior L.J. Smith was playing the first of back-to-back homecoming games that will end Saturday in his hometown of Lincolnton, while West Charlotte alumnus and head coach Jacoby Davis was able to show off a youthful and talented 10th Lions team.

In the end, Oak Hill’s size and talent was too much for West Charlotte in an 82-72 victory.

“I thought our young kids really fought and competed,” said Davis, a 2011 West Charlotte High graduate in his 10th season as head coach. “We could’ve easily given up when they made their run. But we fought the whole game.”

Playing in front of a near-capacity crowd that included former West Charlotte and Oak Hill star Jeff McInnis, the Lions took early leads of 5-2 and 8-6 before the visiting Warriors reeled off a 29-11 burst that put them ahead 35-19 midway through the second quarter.

Oak Hill, whose 92.4 all-time winning percentage is considered the best in U.S. high school basketball history, eventually built an 18-point lead at 54-36 before the Lions rallied to within single digits with 3:38 to play. Spurred on by their vocal supporters, West Charlotte, No. 5 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll, got as close as eight three different times in the final 1:28 but could get no closer.

“They have a good team, and they played hard against us,” said Smith, who finished with a game-high 29 points.

Smith, who tallied 1,475 points in his first two seasons at Lincolnton High — highlighted by a state-record 960 points as a sophomore last year — was a consistent scorer throughout the opener of his two-day homecoming trip.

The 6-foot-4 swingman who committed to Ohio State University last month scored 10 points in the first quarter, seven in the second quarter, seven in the third quarter and five in the fourth quarter. Smith returns to the Lincolnton gymnasium on Saturday when Oak Hill plays Charlotte’s Providence Day School at 7 p.m.

Ethan Mgbako, a 6-6 senior guard who has signed with Vanderbilt, added 16 points for the Warriors, who had 6-11 and 6-9 post players who towered over West Charlotte’s youthful squad.

The Lions’ tallest player, 6-5 center Jkhai Wade, also is their lone senior.

But sophomores Cha Cho Womack (25 points) and Kaharri Coleman (20) and junior Amen Pressley (18) gave it all they had before West Charlotte (6-1) suffered its first loss.

The Lions continue a challenging schedule next week in the Marvin Ridge Holiday tournament before opening play in the Meck Power Six 7A/8A Conference on Jan. 6 — a league that includes two-time defending state champion North Mecklenburg.

“I think playing teams like we’ve played will certainly help us this season,” Davis said.
