Friday’s girls’ rewind: No. 2 Mallard Creek bounces back against Pinecrest

After Mallard Creek’s girls’ basketball team, No. 2 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll, was upset at home by South Mecklenburg on Tuesday, the Mavericks quickly got back to winning Friday, beating Pinecrest 66-36.

Mallard Creek (8-2) allowed Pinecrest just 11 total points in the first half and got big games from My’Asia Young (18 points, five rebounds, three steals), Camri Hobbs (10 points, eight rebounds, three assists) and Jazmeen Stone (11 points, two steals).

Friday’s top girls’ performers

Amani Barner, Myers Park: In a 61-47 win over Forest Hills, Barner had 20 points, nine rebounds, six steals and five assists. Teammate Summer Thomason had 13 points and five rebounds.

Victorian Collins, Concord Academy: In a 63-54 win over First Baptist (SC) at the Beach Ball Classic, Collins had 13 points, 17 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Claire Frank, South Point: In a 53-39 win over Ashbrook, Frank had a career-high 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists. South Point (1-7) got its first win of the season.

Reece Long, Lake Norman Charter: Long had a game-high 33 points in a 93-75 win over Christ the King.

My’Asia Young, Mallard Creek: Young had 18 points, five rebounds and three steals in a 66-36 win over Pinecrest.

Porter Ridge 60, Piedmont 31: The Pirates trounced their neighbors and improved to 10-1, 3-0.

Lake Norman Charter 93, Christ the King 75: The Knights remained unbeaten (11-0) by building a 29-10 first-quarter lead and coasting. Reece Long scored 33 points, and Abby Courtney added 30 for Lake Norman Charter. Sam Colantonio scored another 20. Rosie Gorman led Christ the King with 23.

Northwest Cabarrus 60, Mooresville 42: Neveah McCorkle scored 16 points for Mooresville, but the Blue Devils were outscored 32-20 in the middle two quarters.
