Tuesday’s rewind: Donovin Jones leads Ardrey Kell past Butler for tourney title
Trailing by eight points with about four minutes to play was hardly how Ardrey Kell coach Mike Craft hoped things would go in the finals of Tuesday’s Ardrey Kell Winter Classic.
But rather than panic, Craft called a timeout that allowed his team to regroup, refocus and change the game’s momentum as the Knights closed the game on a 12-2 surge for a 56-54 victory, capped by sophomore guard Donovin Jones’ driving layup with 5.3 seconds left.
“Their 1-3-1 defense turned the game around for them,” Craft said of Butler and coach Patrick King’s strategy that spurred a 9-0 run that put the Bulldogs ahead by eight points. “So when I called that timeout, I just told the team to stick together and get scores and stops and see what happens.”
Jones was the driving force — literally and figuratively — as he scored 10 of Ardrey Kell’s 15 fourth quarter points including seven in the final 3:24.
“He’s very quick and takes it to the hole strong like he did on that last play,” Craft said. “I also can’t say enough about Braden (Suggs) for what he did for us the whole tournament.”
Suggs, a junior, was named MVP after he scored 64 points in the three games, including 15 in Tuesday’s finale. Jones added 12 points and seniors Dylan Morrison scored 11 and Matthew Craft 10 to lead the Knights’ balanced scoring effort.
Senior Jeremiah Jones had six points but his biggest contribution came on Butler’s last two offensive possessions. He came away with a steal to create Ardrey Kell’s final possession then ensured the victory by blocking Elijah Shine’s shot in the lane just before the final buzzer.
“Playing at home helps,” Craft said of winning the holiday tournament three straight years. “Butler has really been a difficult opponent for us in two of those games.”
The Knights edged Butler 74-67 in the tournament debut in 2023 and rolled past Gainesville, Fla., The Rock 73-55 last year when current Virginia Tech freshman Brett Freeman scored a school-record 49 points.
Tuesday’s victory improved Ardrey Kell to 10-2 and increased its winning streak to eight.
Butler (11-2), which was playing without 6-foot-7 junior Isaiah White (ankle), was led by senior Terrance Badio’s game-high 20 points. Ian Tomlinson added 11 for the Bulldogs.
