Tuesday’s girls’ rewind: No. 8 Mallard Creek stuffs No. 1 North Meck at home
Round 1 goes to Mallard Creek.
The Mallard Creek girls’ basketball team, No. 8 in The Sweet 16, beat visiting No. 1 North Mecklenburg, 49-46, in front of a sold out crowd Tuesday night at Mallard Creek High School in northeast Charlotte.
And it provided a terrific 18th birthday present for standout Mavericks’ guard Kiara Anderson, the Georgia Southern commit who tallied a game-high 22 points.
But Anderson, a 90 percent free throw shooter, suffered uncharacteristic struggles at the foul line in the closing seconds.
Yet, after missing three of four free throws, she made two defensive plays and was fouled with 2.8 seconds left and converted two huge free throws with Mallard Creek clinging to a 47-46 advantage.
After Anderson blocked a driving layup attempt by North Mecklenburg’s Autumn Lacy with 3.8 seconds left, Anderson was fouled and hit two free throws with 2.8 seconds left.
North Meck got one more shot at it, after a foul and timeout gave the Vikings the ball on the side with 2.0 seconds to play but Observer midseason player of the year Lenise Joseph was not able to get off a potential game-tying attempt at the buzzer with Anderson applying defensive pressure well behind the 3-point line.
“I know she was beating herself up about missing those free throws but she hit them at the end,” said Mallard Creek coach Karlyn Dixon, who celebrated her 100th coaching victory. “She made all kinds of plays for us tonight.”
The Mavericks (12-4) have played a difficult schedule and had lost four of its past six games before Tuesday’s conference showdown in the Meck Power Six 7A/8A opener for both teams.
Mallard Creek played like it had been battle-tested and took a double-digit lead at 27-17 in the first half and maintaining the lead for all but one minute, 19 seconds of the second half.
Still, North Meck (11-2) — which lost its second straight game — made a push.
Joseph’s three-point play cut the Mavericks lead to 3 points, at 46-43, with 2:42 left to play. And then the Vikings forced a 5-second count on Anderson for a turnover. But Mallard Creek got a stop and then spread the floor and forced the Vikings to foul, while using nearly all of remaining two minutes of clock.
After Anderson’s first free throw miss with 37.6 seconds left, North Meck’s Stephanie Mobley made a deep 3-point shot, on a sideline out of bounds play after a timeout to cut Mallard Creek’s lead 47-46 with 28.2 seconds left to set up the final, frantic seconds — and Anderson’s defensive plays and redemption free throws.
“This one feels really good,” said Dixon, whose Mavericks beat North Meck in two of their three meetings last year including the old Queen City 3A/4A Conference tournament final. “The girls have been working really hard.
“We just came off playing nationally-ranked teams (in Raleigh’s John Wall Classic) so this was big.”
The teams meet again on Jan. 30 at North Meck and many think they could face off for a third time in the postseason league tournament that is slated for Feb. 16-20.
