Tuesday’s boys’ rewind: No. 3 North Meck fights off Mallard Creek’s upset bid

Coming off a sixth-place finish in The Classic in Bristol, Tenn., last week, two-time defending state champion North Mecklenburg opened its Meck Power Six 7A/8A Conference schedule with a 64-50 win at Mallard Creek on Tuesday.

Mallard Creek “did a good job after we got up early,” North Mecklenburg coach Duane Lewis said. “We had to make some adjustments and were able to come away with the win.

“So you’re 1-0, on the road, in a tough conference. So we’re happy about that.”

The Vikings (11-2, 1-0), ranked No. 3 in the Sweet 16, weren’t able to put the host Mavericks (5-9, 0-1) away until the fourth quarter.

Mallard Creek was within single digits of the Vikings with six minutes left in the fourth quarter.

ExZavier Young had 20 points to lead North Mecklenburg with D.J. Lindsay, Jr., adding 16 and Alex White 11. For Mallard Creek, Lajalin Overton had 15 points.
