Tuesday’s girls’ rewind: Charlotte Latin wins 7th straight, routs Charlotte Christian

Charlotte Latin’s girls basketball team won its seventh straight game with an impressive 56-24 win at Charlotte Christian in the Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association opener for both teams.

The Hawks (16-2, 1-0) were led by Charlotte Tune, who scored 19 points, Claire Martin (14) and Lanie Edwards (11).

Second-year coach Giovanni Mack’s team is now just four wins shy of the school’s first 20-win season since 2018 and is a contender for the school’s first league title since 2019. Charlotte Christian (6-11, 0-1) was led by Abigail Bellis (11 points).

Tuesday’s #BIG5 girls’ top performers

Justice Alexander, Concord Academy: Alexander had a game-high 26 points in a 58-17 win over Hickory Grove.

Jakaila Gaskin, Cannon School: Gaskin had a game-high 20 points in a 61-24 win over Charlotte Country Day.

Ma-Kaela Gidney, Hickory Ridge: Gidney had a game-high 20 points and five steals in a 62-14 win over AL Brown.

Julia O’Malley, Providence Day: O’Malley had a game-high 18 points in an 73-31 win over Covenant Day in the CISAA conference opener for both teams. The Chargers, No. 5 in The Sweet 16, had 22 assists as a team.

Taylor and Kylie Riggenbach, Lincoln Charter: Sister duo combined for 27 points in a 57-20 win over Bradford Prep.

No. 9 Cannon School 61, Charlotte Country Day 24:Jakaila Gaskin scored 20 points and Brooke Busy added 14, as the Cougars (13-5, 1-0) opened conference play on a big note. Olive Bigham scored 10 points for the Buccaneers (9-12, 0-1).

No. 5 Providence Day 73, Covenant Day 31: Julia O’Malley (18 points) and Anyah Shah (12) supplied the scoring leadership as the Chargers (15-3, 1-0) rolled to a road victory. Providence Day had a team total of 22 assists. Covenant Day is 6-8, 0-1.

GREATER METRO 6A/7A

Hickory Ridge 62, A.L. Brown 14: Ma-Kaela Gidney’s 20 points and five steals led the Ragin’ Bulls (11-1, 5-0) past the Wonders (7-7, 3-2), Aubrey Cranford added 13 points for Hickory Ridge.

West Cabarrus 59, Cox Mill 39: Shariah White (21 points) led four players in double figures, as the Wolverines (10-5, 4-1) remained a game behind first-place Hickory Ridge. Maddie Alexander topped Cox Mill (6-7, 3-2) with 17 points.

BIG SOUTH 5A/6A

Hunter Huss 59, Crest 29: The Huskies (9-5, 5-0) blitzed the Chargers (2-6, 2-2) 20-2 in the first quarter and never looked back.

Kings Mountain 60, Ashbrook 45: Jazmine Twitty scored 11 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter, as the visiting Mountaineers (6-9, 3-1) downed the Green Wave (5-7, 1-3). Ashbrook narrowed the gap to 44-39 after three quarters, but the Mountaineers pulled away. Jazmin Sumter and Arianna McDowell each scored 14 for Ashbrook.

South Point 50, North Gaston 12: Jyi’Yanna Watkins and Tierney Waters each scored 11 points, and Rowen Trexler added 10, as South Point (4-9, 3-1) crushed the Wildcats (6-7, 1-4).

No. 5 Concord Academy 58, Hickory Grove Christian 37: Justice Alexander’s 26 points lifted the host Eagles (15-7, 4-0) over the Lions (8-5, 2-2). Quinn Hicks added 10 points for Concord Academy, which outscored Hickory Grove 23-4 in the first quarter.

Lincoln Charter 57, Bradford Prep 20: Taylor Riggenbach scored 16 points, and her sister Kylie added 11, as the Eagles (9-4, 5-0) remained unbeaten in conference play. Bradford Prep fell to 6-8, 1-4.

Pine Lake Prep 70, Langtree Charter 24: The host Pride (5-10, 2-3) got 26 points from Sophie Chilton and 12 from Madelyn Beaver. Pine Lake Prep raced to a 27-5 first-quarter lead over the Lions (1-8, 0-5).

Bessemer City 56, Cherryville 14

Lincolnton 63, West Lincoln 45: Lincolnton (7-6, 5-2) led 24-21 early in the third quarter but outscored West Lincoln (6-9, 3-4) 21-10 over the remainder of the period for a 45-31 lead.

No. 10 Stuart Cramer 71, East Gaston 14: Oshauna Holland had another huge night, with 38 points, 11 rebounds, 10 steals and seven assists, as the Storm (13-1, 7-0) swamped East Gaston (2-14, 1-7). Lauren Humphrey added 10 points and 13 rebounds, and Amasia McDowell scored 10.

James scored 25 points, added 17 rebounds, and blocked 10 shots. Olympic is 2-12, 1-4. Harding dropped to 0-11, 0-5.

Central Cabarrus 53, Berry Academy 22: Myajah Nix totaled 20 points and 14 rebounds, as the host Vikings (10-5, 3-2) routed the Cardinals (1-7, 1-4). Felicity Arellano added 13 for Central Cabarrus
