Former Panther, Chambers High coach Captain Munnerlyn has a new job. What we know

After one season at Chambers High School, former Carolina Panthers defensive back Captain Munnerlyn is leaving for a pro job.

But he could be back with the Cougars next fall.

Munnerlyn will be joining another former Panthers player on the staff of the Columbus Aviators of the United Football League.

The UFL, which lists Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a co-owner, will begin its third season in March and run for 12 weeks.

Munnerlyn will be defensive coordinator for head coach Ted Ginn Jr. Ginn was named coach of the team in December. A former three-time All-American at Ohio State, he was the ninth overall pick by the Dolphins in 2007 and played 14 seasons.

Ginn played with the Panthers in 2013 and from 2015-16, when he was a member of the Carolina team that played in Super Bowl 50.

Munnerlyn, 37, played in college at South Carolina and was drafted by the Panthers in the seventh round of the 2009 draft. He played with Carolina from 2009-13 and from 2017-18.

After working as an assistant at Myers Park High School, Munnerlyn was named head coach at Chambers in January 2025.

Munnerlyn’s first team was competitive, finishing 5-7 in the state’s toughest conference, the Meck Power 6. The Cougars won a first-round playoff game on the road, upsetting Pinecrest 32-31.

Chambers athletic director Reese Felder told The Observer that Munnerlyn was still the Cougars’ coach. Efforts to reach Munnerlyn Wednesday were not successful.
