Friday’s boys’ rewind: East Meck upsets No. 7 Ardrey Kell, ends Knights’ win streak

Nixon Wright, a 6-foot-5 junior, had 21 points Friday to lead East Meck to a 57-51 upset of Ardrey Kell in a big Southwestern 7A/8A conference game.

The Eagles (12-8, 4-0) won their third straight game and ended Ardrey Kell’s 13-game win streak. The teams were tied for first place heading into the game. The Knights fell to 15-3, 3-1.

Down 32-29 at halftime, the Eagles outscored Ardrey Kell 15-10 in the third quarter and 13-9 in the fourth.

Braylen Caldwell had 16 points for East Meck. Braden Suggs (17) and Dylan Morrison (15) led Ardrey Kell, which missed a 3-pointer near the end of the game that might have forced overtime.

Nolan Lowery, Charlotte Country Day: Lowery had a game-high 20 points in a 72-47 upset of Charlotte Latin (14-7, 2-2 CISAA). Country Day (12-11, 2-2) won its third straight game.

Collin McConneyhead, Lake Norman Charter: McConneyhead had a team-high 25 points in a 59-50 win over Community School of Davidson.

Lincoln Raper, Concord Academy: Raper had a game-high 20 points in a 91-55 win over SouthLake Christian. Concord Academy is No. 1 in The Observer’s Sweet 16.

Jordan Walton, Mooresville: In a 75-54 win over Statesville, Walton had 13 points, five assists and three steals.

Nixon Wright, East Mecklenburg: The 6-5 junior had a game-high 21 points in an upset of Ardrey Kell. East Meck ended the Knights’ 13-game win streak.

Friday’s boys’ roundup

Ninth-ranked North Mecklenburg jumped to a big lead over visiting Independence on Friday night, then held off a Patriot rally for a 56-53 Meck Power Six 7A/8A boys’ basketball victory.

The Vikings (14-3, 4-0) led 18-7 after one quarter, but Independence (10-7, 2-2) gradually narrowed the gap and made a game of it.

Ashton Pierce led North Mecklenburg with 17 points, and Exzavier Young added 15.

Christian Jones topped the Patriots with 16.

South Mecklenburg 83, Garinger 65: The host Wildcats (3-11, 0-4) trailed only 37-32, but the Sabres (8-10, 2-2) outscored them 46-33 in the second half.

Providence 69, Ballantyne Ridge 39: The host Panthers (9-8, 3-1) won for the seventh time in their last eight games, as Caleb Gaither scored 18 points and Connor Hodgson added 14. The Wolves slipped to 8-10, 1-3.

Cannon School 63, Covenant Day 59: Cannon School (10-11, 3-1) scored a tight road victory and remained a game behind first-place Providence Day. Covenant Day fell to 8-15, 1-3.

Charlotte Country Day 72, Charlotte Latin 47: Nolan Lowery (20 points) and Emory Roberts (19) led the Buccaneers (12-11, 2-2) past the Hawks (14-7, 2-2). Emory Chaney scored 15 for Charlotte Latin.

No. 6 Providence Day 71, Charlotte Christian 67: These neighborhood rivals played a tight game, with Providence Day (16-5, 4-0) rallying from a 56-54 third-quarter deficit. Columbus Parker scored a game-high 24 for the Chargers, and Aiden Scruitsky added 18. Matty Carroll scored 16 for the Knights (15-9, 0-4).

No. 13 Mooresville 75, Statesville 54: Taurean McKinnon scored 16 points, and Jordan Walton added 13 points, five assists and three steals for the Blue Devils (14-2, 3-0). Statesville dropped to 5-12, 1-2.

No. 5 Gaston Christian 72, Hickory Grove Christian 34: The Eagles (22-5, 6-2) bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to first-place Concord Academy and won for the fifth time in six games. The Lions fell to 11-9, 1-6.

Metrolina Christian 61, Westminster Catawba 50: Rickey Torrence (19 points) and Tyler Gadd (16) led the Warriors (17-8, 4-3), who outscored Westminster Catawba (14-11, 1-7) by a 21-10 count in the fourth quarter. Gannon Parker led Westminster with 19 points.
