Here’s where Hough, Hickory Ridge, other area teams will wrestle for state titles
Hough and Millbrook will chase their dreams of Class 8A dual meet state wrestling championships Tuesday at Northwest Guilford High.
Hickory Ridge, A.L. Brown, Mooresville and Cardinal Gibbons will gather at Athens Drive High in Raleigh to decide a 7A champion.
Those were some of the sites announced Friday by the N.C. High School Athletic Association for the final rounds of the dual meet playoffs.
Originally, the final rounds were to have looked much different. The opening two rounds, and then the regional semifinal and final rounds, were to have been hosted by top seeds. The state finals were set for the Greensboro Coliseum complex.
But two weekends of winter storms wreaked havoc with the schedule, so the NCHSAA altered the format.
Now, the four surviving teams in Class 8A and the four semifinalists in 1A will compete at a campus site.
And in the other six classes, 7A down to 2A, eight teams will gather for regional semifinals, regional finals and championship matches. Those matches are set for Monday and/or Tuesday.
Schedules at each site will be announced this weekend, but the days and times already have been set for the 8A and 2A classes.
Here’s what we know so far about next week’s dual meet final rounds:
Class 8A
Site: Northwest Guilford High.
Time/day: 6 p.m. Tuesday
Opening matches: Hough vs. Northwest Guilford (West finals); Millbrook vs. Laney (East finals).
Class 7A
Site: Athens Drive High (Cardinal Gibbons, host).
Time/day: TBA
Opening matches: Hickory Ridge vs. Davie County (West semifinal); A.L. Brown vs. Mooresville (West semifinal); Cardinal Gibbons vs. Lumberton (East semifinal); Topsail vs. New Bern (East semifinal).
Class 6A
Site: Union Pines High, Cameron.
Time/day: TBA
Opening matches: Piedmont vs. St. Stephens (West semifinal); Dudley vs. Eastern Guilford (West semifinal); White Oak vs. Jacksonville (East semifinal); Middle Creek vs. Union Pines (East semifinal).
Class 5A
Site: Cedar Ridge High, Hillsborough
Time/day: TBA
Opening matches: East Rowan vs. West Rowan (West semifinal); North Henderson vs. Enka (West semifinal); Montgomery Central vs. Croatan (East semifinal); Cedar Ridge vs. Person (East semifinal).
Class 4A
Site: Uwharrie Charter, Asheboro
Time/day: TBA
Opening matches: Bandys vs. Pisgah (West semifinal); Maiden vs. R-S Central (West semifinal); North Pitt vs. Uwharrie Charter (East semifinal); Central Davidson vs. Morehead (East semifinal)
Class 3A
Site: Wheatmore High, Trinity

Class 2A

Time/day: 4:30 p.m. Tuesday

Site: South Davidson High
