CMS schools hope to resume sports schedules Thursday, after days of winter impact
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials said Wednesday afternoon that they would resume in-person classes Thursday, though on a two-hour delay.
It will be the first day of in-person classes this week, after a winter storm last weekend left hard-to-clear accumulations of sleet and ice on school properties and roadways. With schools not doing in-person instruction, scheduled sports events Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were postponed.
The announcement about Thursday’s classes will clear the way for CMS schools to play postponed events on Thursday evening.
Most of the areas private schools, along with the Union County Public Schools, resumed in-person classes Wednesday. Some of those schools were planning to hold sports events Wednesday night.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be on a two-hour delay Thursday, which will allow for games to be played.
And West Charlotte’s scheduled Thursday game with Ambassador Christian, a matchup of two of the state’s top teams, is now postponed. The Lions, who will play a conference game with rival North Meck Thursday, will try to find a makeup date.
And there is another weather system headed to the region.
The National Weather Service is calling for a low of 22 degrees with a 50% chance of snow, possibly beginning as early as Friday night, when games would be held. Snow is again in the forecast Saturday, and with temperatures below freezing most of the weekend, Monday — and Tuesday — in-person school days could be in jeopardy.
Could conference tournaments be abandoned?
With just over two weeks left in the regular-season, teams still have time to get games in, but if the postponed games continue, schools may be forced to abandon conference tournaments the week of Feb. 16 in an effort to finish regular-season games before the playoffs begin the week of Feb. 23.
The N.C. High School Athletic Association allows basketball teams to play three games in a week. It also allows for a fourth game, so long as that fourth game isn’t on a school day. Teams can use the four-game rule twice in a season.
Wrestling, swimming also affected
The NCHSAA dual team wrestling seeding has been postponed until Friday due to inclement weather that has cost teams practice and competition.
The deadline to submit information is Thursday by 11:59 p.m. The first and second rounds of the dual team playoffs will now be Feb. 3. The third and fourth rounds are on Thursday and the state finals are on Feb. 7.
The NCHSAA regional diving championships have also been canceled due to the weather forecast and travel restrictions. Divers who qualified for regionals will advance to the state finals.
The regional swimming championships are scheduled for this weekend, including several in Charlotte. The NCHSAA Board will meet and make a final determination on the regional swimming events Wednesday night.
