Myers Park girls, boys win NCHSAA 8A swim championships
Myers Park and Raleigh Charter closed the four-day N.C. High School Athletic Association swim and diving championships by sweeping state titles Saturday in their respective meets.
Myers Park took both the boys’ and girls’ team titles in Class 8A. Earlier in the day, Raleigh Charter swept the boys’ and girls’ crowns in the 1A/2A/3A meet at the Cary Aquatic Center.
Myers Park’s girls won their fifth straight state championship, taking the Class 8A title with 291 points, to 229 for runner-up Enloe.
A pair of sophomores, Emma Richardson (100 butterfly) and Karina Plaza (100 backstroke) won individual events. The Mustangs also won the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.
But the outstanding swimmer award in the 8A girls’ event went to Green Hope’s Sloan Whelehan, who won the 50 and 100 freestyle races and swam on the victorious 400 relay team.
The Myers Park boys won their first state swim championship in 50 years. The Mustangs’ last title was in 1976.
This year’s team edged runner-up Green Hope 334-300.
Peter Cassidy (100 freestyle) and George Robinson (diving) won individual events, and the Mustangs took the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
