Tuesday’s girls’ rewind: Hickory Ridge dominates Harding in road conference game

Ma-Kaela Gidney scored 21 points to lead Hickory Ridge to a 61-22 win over Harding in Charlotte Tuesday night.

Hickory Ridge (18-4, 12-0 Greater Metro 6A/7A) won its 12th straight game and clinched at least a share of the league championship. Aubrey Cranford (13 points) and Miranda Duley (10) also hit double figures for Hickory Ridge.

Leading by 22 points at halftime, the Ragin’ Bulls outscored Harding 27-2 in the third quarter.

Harding, which had a two-game win streak snapped, fell to 2-16 overall and 2-10 in league play.

Tuesday’s girls’ #BIG5 top performers

Justice Alexander, Concord Academy: Alexander had a game-high 24 points in a 71-20 win over Hickory Grove.

Za’Myia Bynum, Queen’s Grant: Bynum had a game-high 21 points in a 58-24 win over Mountain Island Charter.

Jakaila Gaskin, Cannon School: Gaskin had a game-high 24 points in 63-22 win over Covenant Day.

Sydney McGuire, Mallard Creek: In a 69-54 win over Butler, McGuire had 16 points and three steals.

Charlotte Tune, Charlotte Latin: Tune had a game-high 22 points in a 49-24 win over rival Charlotte Country Day.

Tuesday’s girls’ roundup

The regular-season championship races in Mecklenburg County’s three Class 7A/8A conferences are coming down to the wire.

No. 2-ranked North Mecklenburg and No. 4 Mallard Creek each won Tuesday night and will take 8-1 Meck Power Six records into their final regular-season games Friday night.

In the Greater Charlotte 7A/8A, first-place South Mecklenburg (9-0) and runner-up Myers Park (8-1) won Tuesday, setting up a championship showdown Friday night at Myers Park.

And in the Southwestern 7A/8A, Ardrey Kell ran its conference record to 9-0 Tuesday night, but the Knights will close the regular season Friday against second-place Providence (8-1).

Here’s how the action went Tuesday night:

GREATER CHARLOTTE 7A/8A

No. 12 South Mecklenburg 88, Garinger 20: The Sabres (19-4, 9-0) led only 23-15 after one quarter, but they outscored the Wildcats (7-12, 3-5) 24-1 in the second quarter. South Meck can do no worse than tie for first place.

MECK POWER SIX 7A/8A

No. 4 Mallard Creek 69, Butler 54: The visiting Mavericks (18-5, 8-1) outscored Butler (12-10, 5-4) by a 22-7 count in the second quarter for a 41-22 halftime lead. My’Asia Young had 14 points, five rebounds and five steals for North Meck, and Sydney McGuire scored a game-high 16 points. Hannah Moss led Butler with 15 points.

No. 2 North Mecklenburg 83, Independence 14: A 27-4 first quarter sent the Vikings (21-2, 8-1) on their way to a rout at Independence (4-18, 0-8).

SOUTHWESTERN 7A/8A

No. 10 Ardrey Kell 75, East Mecklenburg 18: The Knights (20-3, 9-0) clinched at least a title tie.

Providence 71, Ballantyne Ridge 39: Anna Fillnow poured in 28 points, Emma Fuller grabbed 13 rebounds, and Corinne Broadway had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Panthers (16-6, 8-1). Natanya Chando led the Wolves (11-12, 4-5) with 11 points.

CISAA

No. 7 Cannon School 63, Covenant Day 22: The Cougars (21-6, 9-0) clinched the conference championship and continued to make a claim for the No. 1 seed in the NCISAA’s 4A postseason playoffs. Jakaila Gaskin led the way with 24 points. Taryn VanderShaaf led Covenant Day (9-16, 2-7) with 10 points.

Charlotte Latin 49, Charlotte Country Day 24: Charlotte Tune’s 20 points led the Hawks (20-5, 5-3) past the Buccaneers (13-16, 3-5). Claire Martin added 14 for the Hawks.

No. 14 Providence Day 55, Charlotte Christian 14: Julia O’Malley scored 16 points, and Katelynn Ramsden added 13 for the Chargers (21-5, 7-2). The Knights fell to 9-14, 2-7.

GREATER METRO 6A/7A

Cox Mill 66, A.L. Brown 37

Olympic 45, Berry Academy 44: The Trojans (3-20, 2-11) rallied from a 50-35 deficit after three quarters and beat the Cardinals (5-12, 3-9). Chaya James led Olympic with 27 points.

West Cabarrus 60, Central Cabarrus 40: The visiting Wolverines (16-6, 10-2) got 17 points and 10 assists from Jillian Simmons. Jahnae Duncan scored 19 for Central Cabarrus (14-9, 7-6).

NORTH PIEDMONT 6A/7A

Statesville 60, Mooresville 42: Ava Waugh scored 19 points, and Aubrey Graham had 10 rebounds, nine assists and six steals, as the Greyhounds (10-10, 3-3) trounced the visiting Blue Devils (3-15, 0-6).

SOUTHERN CAROLINA 6A/7A

Forestview 50, Ashbrook 44: Amari Neeley and DeLainah Springs each scored 15 points to lead the Jaguars (3-17, 2-7). Arianna McDowell led Ashbrook (8-10, 4-6) with 13 points.

Kings Mountain 42, South Point 38: Ja’Nyiah Bittle scored a game-high 18 points, but the Raiders (6-14, 5-4) fell to the host Mountaineers (8-12, 5-4).

ROCKY RIVER 4A/5A

Forest Hills 50, Anson County 9: The Yellow Jackets (18-4, 11-0) clinched the regular-season championship by routing the Bearcats (1-21, 0-11).

Jay M. Robinson 35, Concord 25: Makiyah Gray scored nine points in leading the Bulldogs (6-13, 4-7) over the Spiders (0-18, 0-10).

Northwest Cabarrus 74, Jesse Carson 19: A 26-4 opening quarter sent the Trojans (17-4, 10-1) past Carson (8-10, 5-6).

Maiden 65, No. 15 East Lincoln 58: Lane Pethel had 26 points and 18 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for the Mustangs (16-5, 9-4). Ava Anderson scored 23 points, and Khiara Culliver added 22 for first-place Maiden (20-1, 12-1). Amma Montaneri scored 22 points for East Lincoln.

No. 9 North Lincoln 79, Bunker Hill 26: The Knights (16-4, 11-1) remained a half-game behind Maiden in the conference race. The Bears fell to 7-14, 1-12.

METROLINA ATHLETIC

No. 11 Concord Academy 71, Hickory Grove Christian 20: Justice Alexander’s 24 points powered the Eagles (22-7, 11-0) past the Lions (15-7, 7-4). Jada Powell added 15 points for the victors, while Lauren Feaster led Hickory Grove with 13.

Lincoln Charter 67, Christ the King 45: The Eagles (16-4, 13-0) clinched at least a tie for the regular-season title. The Crusaders fell to 14-7, 8-5.
