Tuesday’s boys’ rewind: Hickory Ridge stops Harding on the road, wins league title
Hickory Ridge’s tenacious defense carried the Ragin’ Bulls to a victory Tuesday night that clinched a regular-season boys’ basketball championship.
That defense forced turnovers at key times and enabled the Bulls to wear down host Harding 67-53 in a Greater Metro 6A/7A game.
With the victory, coach David Broome’s team improved to 11-1 in the conference. Hickory Ridge has a three-game lead over its closest competition, with two games remaining.
Harding made it tough on the Ragin’ Bulls (17-5 overall) for 3½ quarters.
The Rams trailed 28-23 at halftime and fell behind 34-25, after a three-pointer by Hickory Ridge junior guard Travien Williams.
But Harding battled back. Zyshauwn Tuck scored on a short jump shot, Syncere Caviness added a basket, then the Rams converted a Hickory Ridge turnover into a Caviness layup.
That cut Hickory Ridge’s lead to 34-31 with 4:11 left in the third quarter.
But the Ragin’ Bulls responded with four free throws, a Samuel Birkemeier 3-pointer, and a Braylon Hill layup — all in a span of three minutes.
That put Hickory Ridge back up 43-33 with 32 seconds left in the third quarter.
Harding got within eight points early in the fourth quarter, but the Ragin’ Bulls opened it up on baskets by Williams, Amari Winters and Elijah Birkemeier for a 53-38 lead.
Providence in position for rare conference title
