Providence Day’s girls, Cary Academy’s boys win NCISAA swim championships

Zetta Grace Bartee’s final lap as a high school swimmer put the finishing touch on a goal that she and her Providence Day teammates had been seeking all season.

Bartee swam the anchor leg on a 400-yard freestyle relay team that won the event Monday evening and completed an N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Division 1 state championship.

It was the first state swim crown ever for Providence Day.

Cary Academy won the NCISAA Division 1 boys’ title at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, despite not winning a single event.

Bartee, a three-time state champion in the 200 freestyle and an Auburn commit, was upset in her specialty event Monday evening, but she helped her Charger teammates grab the bigger prize.

Winning the state title was a goal that she and coach Kristina Bond talked about in the preseason.

The Chargers did it with room to spare, totaling 380 points. Two-time defending girls’ state champ Charlotte Country Day (298) was second.

Providence Day didn’t have any individual champions Monday, but the Chargers won the 200 medley and 400 free relays.

Add in a number of second- and third-place finishes from Bartee, Zona Smith, Annie Shall and Maddy Boland, and the Chargers had points to spare.

The girls’ individual standouts were a pair of Cary Academy swimmers. Caden Martin, a Virginia commit, won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races in record time, breaking marks she had set a year ago. And Caroline He won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.

Durham Academy’s Yari Brock set a record in winning the 200 freestyle, and she also captured the 500 freestyle.

Cary Academy depth

Cary Academy’s victory in the boys’ competition was a textbook case of winning with depth. The Chargers had only two swimmers finish in the top three — runner-ups Steven Zhou He (200 individual medley) and Nathaniel Ye (100 breaststroke). But they filled the results sheet with other top-seven finishers and edged runner-up Charlotte Latin 317-299.

The outstanding individual boys’ swimmer was Ravenscroft’s Mattaus Rammel, who plans to swim at Ohio State. He won the 50 freestyle and then took the 100 butterfly, breaking an event record he had set last year.

Charlotte Latin sophomore David Sammons also had a big meet. Sammons set a record in the 200 freestyle, finished second in the 100 butterfly, and swam on victorious 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.
