Corvian Community Charter, Union Academy sweep NCHSAA indoor track titles
Corvian Community and Union Academy opened four days in indoor track and field championships by sweeping boys’ and girls’ team titles Wednesday at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
Corvian Community took the two team titles in the Class 1A/2A meet, and Union Academy followed with a dominating performance in the Class 3A meet.
Competition continues Thursday with the 4A and 6A meets. The 5A and 7A meets are Friday, and the 8A championships will be decided Saturday.
Corvian Community’s boys finished 40 points ahead of second-place Mountain Island Charter.
Individual champions for the Cardinals were Cameron Simpson (55-meter hurdles), Reginald Grier (high jump), and Jakari Galvin (long jump). The Cardinals also won a relay event.
The Outstanding Performer award in the 1A/2A boys’ meet went to Elkin’s Jericho Edwards.
Meanwhile, the Corvian Community girls squeaked past Mountain Island Charter 114-104.5 for the team title.
Union Academy freshman Mylan Clay was named Outstanding Performer as she captured the 500 meters, the 55 hurdles and the triple jump.
Freshman Zhoe Holt of Bradford Prep won the 55- and 300-meter dashes.
In the Class 3A meet, the Union Academy boys narrowly edged runner-up Northwood 64-57.
Long jump winner Dalton Johnson of Bartlett Yancey was named Outstanding Performer.
Union Academy champions were Jack Hightower (shot put), Preston Mills (500 meters), and the 4-by-800 relay team of Trevor Mills, Stephen Gonzales, Ethan Williams and Mills.
