Tuesday’s rewind: Talking Preps’ CMS all-conference teams, scores, schedules

On Tuesday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ league continued conference basketball tournaments, as did Mecklenburg County-area leagues.

The N.C. Independent Schools also tipped off its boys’ and girls’ state tournaments.

Caroline Clark, Weddington girls: Clark had a team-high 20 points in a 68-25 win over Piedmont in the Southern Carolinas conference tournament.

Donnie Jones, Ardrey Kell: Jones scored a game-high 25 points in a 73-47 win over Rocky River in the Southwestern 7A/8A conference tournament.

Sean Nix, Cannon School: Nix scored a game-high 31 points in an 80-55 triumph over Charlotte Country Day in the first round of the NCISAA 4A state tournament.

Sara Simko, Ballantyne Ridge girls: Simko had a team-high 11 points in an 66-51 victory over East Mecklenburg as her school won the first conference tournament game in school history.

Rowen Trexler, South Point girls: Trexler scored all of her 10 points in the fourth quarter of a 45-43 win over Ashbrook, including the game-winning basket with 1 second left.

Cannon School 80, Charlotte Country Day 55: Sean Nix poured in 31 points, and D.J. Rogers added 24 points, as the sixth-seeded Cougars (16-12) advanced to a Friday quarterfinal game at Carmel Christian.

Emory Roberts scored 16 for the Buccaneers, who finished with a 13-17 record.

Charlotte Country Day 54, Durham Academy 38: The eighth-seeded Buccaneers (14-17) got 26 points from Olive Bigham. They will visit top-seeded and defending state champion Cannon School in a quarterfinal game Friday.

Hickory Grove Christian 56, Asheville Christian 31: The Lions (17-7) led only 16-11 at halftime but outscored Asheville Christian (7-19) 23-6 in the third quarter. Lauren Feaster led Hickory Grove with 26 points and eight rebounds.

Gaston Day 81, Carolina Friends 50: The host and fifth-seeded Spartans (18-11) took a 30-14 first-quarter lead and extended it to 57-24 by halftime. Gaston Day will host Westminster Catawba on Thursday in the second round.

No. 3 Ardrey Kell 73, No. 6 Rocky River 47: Donnie Jones score 25 points, and Braden Suggs added 17 for the Knights (19-6), who will face Providence in the semifinals Wednesday.

No. 3 Ballantyne Ridge 66, No. 6 East Mecklenburg 51: The Wolves (13-12) scored their first-ever girls’ tournament victory, as Sara Simko scored 11 points. Allana Jones had a game-high 12 points for the Eagles (7-18).

No. 4 Palisades 64, No. 5 Rocky River 49: Brooklyn Young had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five steals for the Pumas (11-12), who will face top seed Ardrey Kell in a Wednesday semifinal. Jasmyn Ashbourne added 14 points for Palisades.

No. 4 Monroe 52, No. 5 Anson County 39: Bryson Simpkins totaled 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Jabari Bronson added 10 points for the Redhawks (11-7). Monroe will face Forest Hills in the semifinals.

No. 3 Bessemer City 82, No. 6 East Gaston 67: Besemer City (15-9) led by 15 points, but East Gaston (6-19) battled back and got within 54-49 on a Ty Scott basket in the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets then pulled away, fueled by Tristen Gordon’s 10 points in the final 10 minutes.

No. 4 Lincolnton 80, No. 5 Stuart Cramer 58: Josiah Guyton’s 25 points led the Wolves into a semifinal match with top seed Burns. Nehemiah Thompson added 13 for Lincolnton (17-8).

No. 1 Stuart Cramer 65, No. 8 East Gaston 24: Oshauna Holland had a triple-double, with 37 points, 10 rebounds and 12 steals. She also had eight assists. Lauren Humphrey added 12 points for the Storm (24-1).

No. 4 Union Academy 57, No. 5 South Stanly 55: Amy Thomas connected on five three-pointers and finished with 17 points for the Cardinals (10-14).

No. 1 Queen’s Grant Charter 99, N.C. School of Science & Math/Morganton 2: Misa Garris scored 21 points and had nine steals, and Malone Hicks added 18 points for the Stallions (25-3).
