Friday’s rewind: Six Charlotte-area teams advance to NCISAA 4A semifinals

Six Charlotte-area teams advanced to the N.C. Independent Schools’ 4A state semifinals on Friday night.

Three of the final four in the girls’ and boys’ brackets all come from the area.

On the girls’ side, No. 2 seed Providence Day (23-5) ran past North Raleigh Christian 68-40. The Chargers will host Rabun Gap (19-9) on Tuesday.

The other semifinal will be in Concord, where reigning state champion Cannon School (23-6) will host Charlotte Latin (22-6).

Latin, the No. 4 seed, advanced with a 52-37 win over Wesleyan Christian. Top-seeded Cannon beat Charlotte Country Day 75-47.

On the boys’ side, second-seeded Providence Day (22-6) got a scare at home from No. 7-seeded Cary Academy, winning 43-40. The Chargers will host Carmel Christian School Tuesday. Carmel Christian (14-11) beat No. 6 Cannon, 84-66.

That semifinal will feature teams with two of the best fan bases in the area. Providence Day and Carmel will meet for the second straight year in the semis. Carmel won, 65-60, last season.

The other semifinal will match No. 4 seed Charlotte Latin (19-9) and Forsyth Country Day (27-3) in Winston-Salem.

Forsyth Country Day, the top seed, slipped past No. 8 Wesleyan Academy, 51-49. Latin, beat Rabun Gap 70-58.

Friday’s #BIG5 top performers

Za’Miya Bynum, Queen’s Grant: In a 77-51 win over Thomas Jefferson in the conference tournament championship game, Bynum had 31 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists.

Hunter Gerould, Carmel Christian: Gerould’s team-high 28 points helped Carmel punch its ticket to the NCISAA state semifinals with an 84-66 win over Cannon School.

Columbus Parker, Providence Day: Parker had 15 points and nine rebounds in a 43-40 win over Cary Academy in the NCISAA 4A semifinals.

Tre Ratliff, Hough: Ratliff hit big free throws down the stretch to lead Hough to a 54-48 win over South Mecklenburg and the school’s first conference tournament championship. He finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Christian Wilson, Mooresville: In a 63-60 win over Davie County in two overtimes, Wilson had 17 points and 12 rebounds to help the Blue Devils win the North Piedmont conference tournament title.

Charlotte Catholic was perfect from the foul line down the stretch Friday night, and it enabled the Cougars to edge host Weddington 44-42 and capture the Southern Carolina 6A/7A boys’ tournament championship.

The top-seeded Cougars (22-4), who compiled an 11-1 regular-season conference record, were pushed to the limit by third-seeded Weddington (17-10).

Charlotte Catholic took a 32-26 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Warriors tied the game on 3-pointers by Legend Stevens and Jake Ford.

Weddington went in front briefly, 37-36, when Tyler Cain hit a long 3-pointers with 2:08 remaining. But the Cougars regained the lead 11 seconds later on a basket by Luke Woeste.

Woeste made a pair of foul shots with 19 seconds left, putting the Cougars up 422-37. Weddington then scored on a basket by Tre Jefferson.

The Cougars’ Jordan was fouled with 4.3 seconds left and made both shots, essentially clinching the victory. Jefferson connected on a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded.

Second-seeded Porter Ridge ran its record to 22-4 by getting past No. 5 Cuthbertson 54-47.

Cuthbertson (15-8) had reached the finals by upsetting No. 4 Charlotte Catholic and No. 1 Marvin Ridge.

NCISAA PLAYOFFS

(Class 4A Boys)

No. 2 Providence Day 43, No. 7 Cary Academy 40: The Chargers (22-6) had a tough battle but advanced to Tuesday’s state semifinal against Carmel Christian. The game will be at Providence Day.

C. Parker had 15 points and nine rebounds, and Aiden Scruitsky added 10 points and five rebounds.

No. 3 Carmel Christian 84, No. 6 Cannon School 66: Hunter Geroud totaled 28 points and 14 rebounds, as the Cougars (14-11) advanced to the state semifinals and a game Tuesday at Providence Day.

Logan Johnson (22 points) and James Wood (18) also had big nights for Carmel Christian. Cannon School finished 16-13.

No. 4 Charlotte Latin 70, No. 5 Rabun Gap (GA) 58: Alex Dauska’s 23 points and Emory Chaney’s 20 points lifted the Hawks (19-9) into the state semifinals. They will play Tuesday at top-seeded Forsyth Country Day (27-3), which edged High Point Wesleyan 51-49 Friday night.

(Class 4A Girls)

No. 1 Cannon School 75, No. 8 Charlotte Country Day 47: Jakaila Gaskin scored 17 points as the defending state champion Cougars (23-6) advanced to the state semifinals. Brooke Busey added 14 points, and Hina Nakamura scored 13.

Cannon School will host Charlotte Latin on Tuesday in the semifinals.

No. 2 Providence Day 68, North Raleigh Christian 40: The Chargers (23-5) cruised into the state semifinals, outscoring North Raleigh Christian 21-4 in the second quarter for a 42-20 halftime lead.

Ginne Anne Dumont (13 points), Julia O’Malley (12) and Layla Clark (11) led Providence Day.

Providence Day will host sixth-seeded Rabun Gap (GA) in the semifinals.

No. 4 Charlotte Latin 52, No. 5 High Point Wesleyan 37: Lanie Edwards scored 17 points, and Mollie Snyder added 15, as the Hawks (22-6) advanced to the Final Four. They will visit Cannon School on Tuesday.

GREATER METRO 6A/7A

(Boys)

No. 1 Hickory Ridge 62, No. 6 Olympic 48: Upstart Olympic (12-15) saw its string of upsets end against the Ragin’ Bulls (22-5). Hickory Ridge has won nine in a row since its only conference loss, on Jan. 23 to Central Cabarrus.

(Girls)

No. 1 Hickory Ridge 55, No. 3 Cox Mill 25: Ma-Kaela Gidney scored 22 points and added five rebounds and six steals, as the Ragin’ Bulls (23-4) cruised to a lopsided championship victory. Miranda Duley added 13 points and 15 rebounds.

NORTH PIEDMONT 6A/7A

(Boys)

No. 1 Mooresville 63, No. 2 Davie County 60 (OT): Carson Schaen, a senior guard, connected on a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded, lifting Mooresville (23-2) over host Davie County (15-10). The War Eagles had rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Taurean McKinnon scored 25 points for Mooresville, Christian Wilson had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Eian Bailey added 10 rebounds.

No. 1 Lake Norman 82, No. 2 North Iredell 33: As has been the case all season in the conference, Lake Norman (21-1) was an easy winner. The defending state champion Wildcats raced to a 36-12 lead after the first quarter.

Kelsey Rhyne led the victors with 21 points, Kaylee Ellis added 18, Kaiya Bond scored 13, and eight other Wildcats got into the scoring column. Maddie Lippard topped North Iredell (17-7) with eight points.

Lake Norman is expected to be the No. 1 seed in Class 7A when the N.C. High School Athletic Association releases its tournament brackets Saturday.

ROCKY RIVER 4A/5A

(Boys)

No. 2 Parkwood 65, No. 1 Forest Hills 62: The Wolf Pack (18-9) upset regular-season champion Forest Hills (18-8) on its home floor by outscoring the Yellow Jackets 8-2 in the closing two minutes. Nehemiah Davis hit a 3-pointer with 1:50 left, putting Parkwood ahead 63-60, and Davis added a pair of free throws with 12.8 seconds for the game’s final points.

Parkwood stole the ball from Forest Hills, preventing the Yellow Jackets from getting a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds.

No. 1 Forest Hills 73, No. 2 Monroe 45: After a 14-14 first quarter, Forest Hills (21-4) outscored the Redhawks 20-10 in the second period for a 34-24 halftime lead. Monroe fell to 20-4.

SOUTH PIEDMONT 4A/5A

(Boys)

No. 1 Jay M. Robinson 66, No. 2 Jesse Carson 50: The Bulldogs (22-3) outscored Jesse Carson (23-4) by a 23-13 margin in the fourth quarter to clinch the title.

(Girls)

No. 1 Northwest Cabarrus 59, No. 2 West Rowan 53: West Rowan’s (24-2) only losses this season have been at the hands of the Trojans (23-4).

CATAWBA SHORES 2A/3A/4A

(Boys)

No. 2 Pine Lake Prep 64, No. 1 Lincoln Charter 61: The Pride (16-11) stunned regular-season champ Lincoln Charter (19-6) with a fourth-quarter surge. Pine Lake Prep went into the final period trailing 54-45.

(Girls)

No. 1 Lincoln Charter 63, No. 2 Lake Norman Charter 52: Lake Norman Charter is 0-3 this season against Lincoln Charter and 20-0 against everyone else. The victorious Eagles (21-4) were led by sisters Taylor and Kylie Riggenbach, who scored 18 and 16 points respectively.

Callie Genece scored a game-high 24 points for the Knights.

No. 1 Queen’s Grant Charter 71, No. 3 Jackson Day 34: The Stallions (30-3) outscored the Mariners (20-9) by a 24-2 margin in the fourth quarter.
