Here’s how to watch, what to know about Wednesday’s NCHSAA state basketball finals

This week, the NC High School Athletic Association will host state basketball championship in eight classes. There will be 16 title games — eight boys’ games and eight girls’.

All games will be Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem.

Play began Wednesday afternoon, with champions crowned in Class 1A. A pair of teams from the East, the Vance Charter boys and Wilson Prep girls, captured state titles.

Wednesday’s games

1A Boys: Vance Charter rolls past Thomas Jefferson

Vance Charter rolled past Thomas Jefferson to win the 1A state title, winning 79-54, at the Joel Coliseum.

Thomas Jefferson Academy (16-13) tied the game at 13-13 with 1:17 left in the first quarter, but Vance Charter (23-2) went on a 13-2 run over the next four minutes.

Vance Charter led 36-27 at halftime and broke the game open by outscoring Thomas Jefferson 26-13 in the third quarter.

Vance Charter 6-6 senior Gary Wilkins made 11 of 13 shots and had 23 points to go with 14 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. He was named the game’s most valuable player.

Thomas Jefferson, which shot 37 percent and had 20 turnovers, got 10 points each from Chance Malachi and Omar Griffin.

It was the first boys’ basketball state title for Vance Charter.

1A GIRLS: Wilson Prep stops Robbinsville

Wilson Prep got a big game from championship MVP My’Angel Brimage to beat Robbinsville 58-44 for the 1A state girls’ championship.

Brimage, a 6-5 sophomore, had 11 points, on 4 for 4 shooting, plus 16 rebounds, five blocks and two assists.

Wilson Prep opened a big lead in the third quarter, but Robbinsville battled back and got within 39-36 on Zayleigh Chekelelee’s three-pointer with 5:56 left in the game. But the Tigers (26-3) went on a 12-0 run over the next 90 seconds and coasted to the program’s first state championship.

Wilson Prep’s Paris Best led all scorers with 21 points, plus eight rebounds and six steals. Robbinsville (17-12), which advanced to the finals as the No. 8 seed in the West, got 11 points, 10 rebounds and two assists from Abby Wehr.

8A BOYS: West Charlotte rallies past Hoggard

West Charlotte won its seventh NCHSAA state championship, 70-68, but didn’t lead until there was 0.6 seconds left.

8A GIRLS: Mallard Creek’s girls win first state title

Mallard Creek’s girls beat Wilmington Hoggard in overtime, 49-45, for the school’s first state title in girls’ basketball.
