Hunter Huss point guard Jaleel Smith didn’t start the 2025-26 school year at the Gaston County school, but he led the Huskies to a season fans will remember for a long time.

He led the Huskies to their first state championship in 15 years, with 41 points in a runaway win over Wilson’s Fike High School in the NCHSAA 5A final.

Smith is The Observer’s high school boys’ basketball player of the year.

Smith already has offers from Mississippi State, N.C. State and Wake Forest. He averaged 26 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 steals for Hunter Huss, which finished the season 26-2 and won the fourth state title in school history.

The All-Observer boys’ coach of the year is West Mecklenburg’s Chris Ewell.

Ewell, a rookie coach, took over a team that was 0-25 a year ago.

He led the Hawks to an 18-10 record and a conference championship. It was West Meck’s first league title in 18 years and its first winning season in 15 years.

West Mecklenburg won the most games since the 2007-08 season, when the Hawks went 19-7.

Ewell also led the team to its first third-round playoff berth in 17 years.

Charlotte Latin’s Emory Chaney and Butler’s Isaiah White are the All-Observer freshman and defensive player of the year.

Chaney, a 5-10 point guard, started playing varsity basketball as an eighth grader. This season, he averaged 19.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists. Chaney led the Hawks in points and was second in rebounds and assists. Charlotte Latin (19-10) reached the N.C. private school state semifinals.

White, a 6-7 junior forward, averaged 11.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.4 blocks, plus 1.9 assists and 1.3 steals this season. Butler finished 16-10 overall.

Jaxon Dollar, East Lincoln, 6-6, Jr, F: A top national football recruit, Dollar also excelled in basketball averaging 21 points, 10.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 3.2 steals and 1.6 blocks for the Mustangs.
