Charlotte Christian football coach Chris James will not return. What we know.

Charlotte Christian football coach Chris James will not return next season.

The school announced the vacancy via a social media post on Tuesday night. Efforts by The Observer to reach James were unsuccessful.

James coached the Knights for three seasons, going 22-14 overall, with three straight winning seasons. This fall, James’ Knights finished 7-5 and reached the N.C. Independent Schools Division I state championship game.

Charlotte Christian has had just one losing season since 2005.

In 2023, James, a 2008 graduate of Charlotte Christian, replaced Jason Estep, who coached the Knights for 16 years and built a regional power.

James played for Estep for three years in high school before playing college football at the University of Richmond. James graduated from UNC Charlotte with a degree in exercise sciene.

After college, James coached as an assistant at Charlotte Christian and left to start the program at Covenant Day.

After that, James came to public schools, serving as an offensive coordinator at Ardrey Kell and Myers Park, before returning to Charlotte Christian for the 2022 season, working under Estep.
