Providence Day promotes Jonathan McIntyre to head boys’ basketball coach

After nearly 20 years as an assistant coach at Providence Day School, Jonathan McIntyre is now the Chargers’ head boys’ basketball coach.

McIntyre, who served as an interim coach last season, was promoted Thursday. He replaces Ron Johnson, who was 88-29 in four seasons. Johnson did not coach last year due to medical issues.

“The athletics department, and the entire Providence Day community, are so grateful for coach Johnson’s leadership and lasting impact on the program,” Providence Day athletic director Nancy Beatty said, “and we continue to support him as he progresses in his recovery process.”

McIntyre served as interim coach last season in Johnson’s absence and started 0-4 against a difficult schedule. He then led the Chargers to an appearance in the N.C. Independent Schools’ state championship game.

Providence Day, which had only three seniors on the roster last season, finished 23-7.

McIntyre built an impressive staff, that includes former Providence Day state championship coach Brian Field, whom The Observer named one of the top boys’ coaches of its Sweet 16 era (1984-2024), as well as former Duke and NBA player Shane Battier.

Battier’s son, Zeke, a 6-foot-7 wing, will be a senior next season.

“Coach McIntyre has done an outstanding job leading our program this year,” said Beatty. “He brings integrity, vision, and a genuine commitment to our student-athletes while continuing to build on the strong tradition of Providence Day basketball. We are excited about the future of the program under his leadership.”
