Two of the state’s top returning high school quarterbacks will play for different teams next season.

A source confirmed to The Observer that former Independence High QB Jared Street will enroll at Weddington on Monday. And Chambers coach Captain Munnerlyn said that former West Charlotte quarterback Jamouri Nichols is now enrolled at his school.

Street and Nichols are rising seniors and considered two of the best returning quarterbacks — and players — in North Carolina.

Both players also went through a coaching change in the offseason.

Sam Greiner left West Charlotte and was replaced by Independence coach DJ McFadden.

Nichols, 6-foot and 185 pounds, led West Charlotte to the NCHSAA 8A Western Regional championship game as a junior last fall. In 2024, as a sophomore, he led the Lions to the NCHSAA 3A state championship and was named championship game MVP.

Last season, Nichols was named offensive player of the year in the Meck Power 6 conference, generally considered the toughest in North Carolina. Nichols threw for 2,005 yards and 20 touchdowns and ran 92 times for 518 yards and 13 scores on a team that was nationally ranked.

Street, who began his career at West Cabarrus High, is 6-foot and 185 pounds. He has offers from Appalachian State, Wake Forest and East Carolina, among others.

Last season, Street — who will have to be cleared by the Union County athletic department before he begins playing at Weddington — threw for 2,317 yards and 19 touchdowns. He ran 72 times for 511 yards and five scores.

Street led Independence to a 10-3 overall record in 2025 and a third round NCHSAA 7A playoff appearance. The Patriots lost 21-6 at Weddington in the playoffs.
