A.L. Brown wins Battle of the Bell, 26-15

Jalen Cagle scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns and set up his game clincher with a 35-yard punt return as Kannapolis Brown defeated Concord 26-15 Thursday in the high school football opener for both teams.

The Wonders won The Battle of the Bell rivalry game for the first time in four years.

Cable led Kannapolis with 115 yards on 17 carries, but 62 of those came in the final period when he carried nine times. With seven minutes, 11 seconds left in the game, Cagle slithered down the left sideline and dove for the pylon for a 9-yard score and a 20-15 Brown lead.

Concord punted on its ensuing possession, and Cagle returned it 35 yards to the Spiders’ 13. Two plays later, Cagle scored from the 3 as the Wonders took a 26-15 lead.

Brown lost three first-half fumbles as the teams tied at halftime 7-7. Steven Howie recovered Concord’s only lost fumble at the Kannapolis 20-yard line on the Spiders’ last drive of the game.

Records: A.L. Brown is 1-0 overall and 0-0 in the MECA 7 4A. Concord is 0-1 overall and 0-0 in the South Piedmont 3A.

Worth mentioning: Concord quarterback Keenan Black completed 19 of 27 pass attempts for 246 yards and scored twice on runs of 1 yard. Carter Mozingo caught nine balls for 91 yards, and Hamsah Nasirildeen had four receptions for 92 yards.

What’s next: A.L. Brown is at South Rowan in a nonconference game on Aug. 28. Concord hosts Albemarle in a nonconference game on Aug. 28.
