Sophomore running back Zamir White lived up to his billing Friday night, rushing for six touchdowns in visiting Scotland’s 42-13 victory over Independence.
White, who already has accepted an invitation for the 2018 U.S. Army All American Bowl, rushed for 296 yards on 29 carries and scored four times before the host Patriots were able to get on the scoreboard.
Independence recovered from a 28-0 deficit and was trailing 28-13 and driving at the Scotland 30 in the third quarter, but a penalty and a bad snap on a punt gave the Fightin’ Scots the ball at the Independence 37. White scored six plays later.
Down 35-13, Independence drove again, reaching the Scotland 17 before an interception ended the threat.
Quote: “If we had scored on that third-quarter drive, it’s a one-touchdown game, and we’re back in it against a very good team. But we’re young, and we’ll learn from this.” – Independence coach Justin Hardin.
Records: Independence (0-2 overall, 0-0 in Southwestern 4A Conference); Scotland (2-0 overall, 0-0 in Southeastern 4A Conference).
Worth mentioning: Independence quarterback Christian McPhail completed 13 of 20 passes for 161 yards. Two of the incompletions went off the fingertips of receivers deep in Scotland territory … Penalties bothered each team, with Scotland whistled 12 times and Independence on nine occasions… Scotland’s Zamir White has rushed for 536 yards in the first two games.
What's Next: Independence is at Olympic next Friday; Scotland is at Marlboro (S.C.) County next Friday.
