Observer’s Sweet 16 football poll 09.07.15
For the first time in school history, Vance is No. 1 in the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 prep football poll.
The Cougars, off to their best start since 2012, beat Virginia state power George Washington 28-7 Friday. Previous No. 1 Mallard Creek lost to Duncan Byrnes 31-29 on a late field goal. Mallard Creek fell to No. 2.
That leaves Vance in the top spot and with the marquee game in town this week when Sweet 16 No. 5 Rock Hill South Pointe comes to town. South Pointe will try to slow a Cougars team averaging 42 points per game.
▪ Charlotte Christian, which has losses to No. 4 Charlotte Catholic and No. 8 Weddington, dropped out of the poll this week, and 2-0 Statesville, a 3A team, moved in at No. 15.
