Concord’s Spiders weave their way back into Sweet 16 football poll

Concord is back in the Observer’s Sweet 16 high school football poll.

The Spiders, a longtime 3A power, lost their first game of the season at 4A A.L. Brown 26-15. Since then, they have reeled off four straight wins – 49-12 over Albemarle, 49-28 over East Rowan, 21-18 over Hickory Ridge and 19-0 over South Rowan last week.

The Spiders, in at No. 16 in this week’s poll, will host Central Cabarrus on Friday.

Mallard Creek remained at No. 1 after a convincing 28-7 win against a McDonogh team ranked No. 4 among all Maryland high school teams. Mallard Creek played all but one down without starting quarterback James Smith. Smith, who was injured during practice last week, threw a long pass on the one play he participated in, after starter Larry Matkins took a hard hit. Matkins is the son of former All-Observer Player of the Year Keith Matkins, who played quarterback for West Charlotte in the late ’90s.
