Mecklenburg County puts 7 on N.C. Shrine Bowl team
Seven Mecklenburg County high school football players were named to the N.C. Shrine Bowl roster, which was released Monday.
The 44-man N.C. team is made up of some of the top public school senior football players. They will play a team of S.C. stars Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg. Since the first Shrine Bowl game in 1937, the event has raised more than $75 million for Shriners Hospitals.
The Mecklenburg County players selected for this year’s game are Ardrey Kell linebacker Julian Okwara, Ardrey Kell offensive lineman Taleni Suhren, Charlotte Catholic linebacker Xander Gagnon, Mallard Creek linebacker Tharon Ingram, Mallard Creek offensive lineman De’Jour Simpson, Providence linebacker Jack King, and West Charlotte defensive lineman Marlon Dunlap.
▪ Observer-area picks included: Cuthbertson QB Austin Kendall; East Lincoln QB Chazz Surratt; Mooresville defensive lineman Jamil Dukes; South Iredell offensive lineman Alex Gourley.
Okwara, Suhren and Kendall were part of the Observer’s Great 8 football team, a collection of the eight top players, by position, in the newspaper’s coverage area.
▪ Several Observer-area stars were named to the S.C. team: Rock Hill Northwestern defensive back Miles Corpening and Northwestern defensive lineman Trae’von Hinton, and Rock Hill South Pointe defensive back Chris Smith.
