Observer’s Sweet 16 football poll 10.12.15

jsiner@charlotteobserver.com

Charlotte Catholic is No. 1 in the Observer’s Sweet 16 for the first time.

The Cougars take over a top spot that has been dominated by Butler or Mallard Creek since the start of the 2009 season. Butler and Mallard Creek have lost twice this season. Mallard Creek dropped from No. 1 to No. 6 this week after being upset at home Friday by Hough. Hough’s 31-28 overtime victory ended Mallard Creek’s 43-game conference win streak.

▪ Catholic has allowed the fewest points of any team in the state, just 20 points in six weeks. The Cougars (6-0) have four shutouts. Catholic will play Friday at No. 12 South Mecklenburg.

▪ New to the poll this week is 3A South Iredell, winners of six straight since a 41-29 loss to 4A Pfafftown Reagan (6-2). Friday night, South Iredell beat 4A rival Lake Norman 40-35. During its win streak, South Iredell has scored at least 38 points each game.
