High School Notes: East Lincoln QB Chazz Surratt making assault on N.C. record books

Friday night, in a 48-24 win over Newton-Conover, East Lincoln quarterback Chazz Surratt broke the Lincoln County career rushing record.

Yes, you read that right. East Lincoln’s quarterback broke the Lincoln County rushing record. Surratt, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound senior, has committed to play college football at North Carolina.

For his career, Surratt has 563 carries for 4,347 yards and 73 touchdowns. He is tied for the county rushing touchdown record. Friday night, Surratt ran 23 times for 282 yards and two scores. He completed 15-of-22 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns.

Eight games into a senior season where he could play as many as 16 times, Surratt has completed 121-of-186 passes for 2,114 yards and 31 touchdowns. He’s rushed 102 times for 1,014 yards and 10 scores. He’s also led his team to 24 straight wins.

▪ Surratt’s brother, Sage, caught eight passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns Friday, raising his season total to 49 catches for 1,041 yards and 16 touchdowns. For his career, Sage Surratt owns Lincoln County records for catches (185), yards (2,995) and touchdowns (44).

Sage Surratt ranks 14th all-time among public school athletes in career receiving yards and ninth in total receptions.

Basketball

Providence Day will host 28 of the state’s girls program Nov. 7 in a preseason jamboree.

Golf

Independence High School sophomore, Parker Melting, won the Southwestern 4A conference golf championship on Oct. 13 at Larkhaven Golf Club. Melting, the lone player on the Patriots first-ever girls golf team, shot a 77 to win the title.

Porter Ridge’s Emily Anderson (80), Myers Park’s Bailey Dorton (82) and Audrey Nelson (85) and Porter Ridge’s Nicole Conti (89) also earned all-Southwestern 4A Conference honors.

Myers Park, led by Coach Jason Lockwood, won the SW4A conference team title, shooting a 264 to beat Porter Ridge by nine shots.

Volleyball

Four area teams are ranked in the MaxPreps N.C. top 10 poll. The poll combines all teams, public and private, from all classes. South Iredell (3A, 16-1) is No. 1; Cox Mill (3A, 23-0) is No. 6; Providence Day (IND, 19-7) is No. 8; and Covenant Day (IND, 24-11) is No. 10.

▪ SouthLake won the 2015 Metrolina Athletic Conference 3-1 over Gaston Christian. SouthLake (19-8) will play Forsyth Country Day at Charlotte Latin Tuesday in the first round of the N.C. Independent Schools 3A playoffs.

Soccer

Providence Day 5, Charlotte Latin 0: Luca Antonacci had both scores for the Chargers (9-9-1, 6-4 CISAA) Saturday. Michael Mulvey and Grant Abrams shared the shutout. Latin fell to 9-4-4, 4-3-2.

▪ Grant Kiker had four goals in a 6-1 win for Charlotte Christian over Cannon School on Senior Night last week.

Misc

The late Dave Price, a former coach at South Mecklenburg High, was recognized for his induction into the NCHSAA Hall of Fame Saurday. Price was represented by his widow, Gloria, Saturday when he and other inductees were recognized in Chapel Hill at halftime of the North Carolina-Wake Forest football game. The official induction banquet and ceremonies will take place in April at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill.

▪ The Hough at Butler basketball doubleheader has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 1.

▪ Charlotte Country Day field hockey star Kathryn Holland had five goals in a 12-0 win over Carolina Day Saturday.

Where East Lincoln QB Chazz Surratt stands on the N.C. public school all-time records list

Touchdown responsiblity, career: Surratt has 116 passing and 73 rushing among his career total of 203. He is second in state history behind Independence’s Chris Leak (216, 1999-2002)

Total offense, career: Surratt has 9,328 passing yards and 4,347 rushing yards among his total of 14,840 yards (he was an all-conference wide receiver on East Lincoln’s state championship team as a freshman). Surratt ranks second all-time among public school athletes, again behind Leak (16,590).

Touchdown passes, career: Surratt now has 116, a Lincoln County record, and he ranks fourth all-time. Leak (185) is the record holder.

Passing yards, career: With 9,328, Surratt ranks No. 9 all-time. He could play eight more games. He threw for 2,114 yards in the first eight. If he duplicated that, he would land in the top four.

Rushing yards: his 4,347 career rushing yards is top 75 all-time. He would rank eighth all-time in Mecklenburg County if eligible.
