Prep roundup: Davidson Day football remains undefeated, Catholic tennis gets regional doubles crown
Davidson Day’s football team remained undefeated with a 63-7 Saturday afternoon win over Rabun Gap.
The Patriots (9-0) are No. 11 in the Observer’s Sweet 16 poll.
Davidson Day led 56-7 at halftime. Quarterback Sam Hartman threw for 277 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Cade Carney had four carries for 72 yards and three touchdowns. Davidson Day’s defense allowed less than 100 yards and had two interceptions. Tommy Lawley returned one of those for a touchdown.
Tennis
Lake Norman’s Lauren Gish won the N.C. 4A Western Regional singles championship Saturday, beating Myers Park’s Maddie Weber 6-1, 6-0 in the final round.
Charlotte Catholic’s doubles team of Catie Nelson and Lizzy Fiepke defeated Myers Park’s Gaby Soden and Katie Soden 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to win the N.C. 4A Western Regional tennis championship Saturday.
▪ At the 1A West regionals, Community School of Davidson’s Marisa Deininger beat Atkins’ Diana Alexandrov 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 to win the individual title.
▪ At the 2A Midwest regionals, Salisbury’s Mario Capito won the singles championship and Salisbury’s Kayla Honeycutt and Kathryn Rusher won in doubles.
▪ At the 2A West regionals, Lake Norman Charter’s Hannah Archer and Olivia Archer won the regional championship.
Soccer
Charlotte Latin 6, Charlotte Christian 0: Latin easily won a first-round N.C. Independent Schools 3A playoff game Saturday. Bennett Jones and William Pendergraft shared the shutout for Latin (11-4-4). Latin got two goals each from Ian Bircak, Andrew Calton and Colin Hayden.
Volleyball
Lake Norman Charter 3, Smoky Mountain 2: Lauren Gedney had 14 kills and Kelsey Palmer had 24 digs as Lake Norman Charter won a tough 2A first-round match 25-23, 14-25, 25-13, 21-15 and 15-9. Lake Norman Charter will host West Wilkes in a second round game Tuesday.
Lake Norman 3, Winston-Salem Glenn 0: Lake Norman won 25-13, 25-14 and 25-18 behind Kara McClung who had 12 kills and three blocks. Haley Bednarick added 11 kills, 15 digs and two blocks. Senior Mikalya Carman had 22 digs and two aces.
