Marvin Ridge into Observer’s Sweet 16 football poll 11.09.15

Three games into the season, Marvin Ridge was 0-3 and was being outscored by an average of 40-14.

But after 56-14 loss Sept. 4 at Ardrey Kell, Mavericks coach Aubrey Carter got his team’s attention. The Mavericks have reeled off eight straight wins, won the Southern Carolina 3A championship and nailed the school’s first winning season since 2011.

And after Friday’s 28-27 win against Union County rival Weddington, Marvin Ridge (8-3) is into the Sweet 16 for the first time. The Mavericks are No. 16. Weddington fell from No. 7 to No. 12 and the top six spots remained the same. Independence dropped out after losing 31-0 to Butler last week in the Southwestern 4A championship game.
