Mecklenburg contests

Vance (6-5) at Charlotte Catholic (10-0), 7:30

After struggling the past few weeks, playing mostly without star tailback Donnavan Spencer (hamstring), Vance controlled much of the game last week against Hough before losing in overtime to the MECKA champion Huskies, seeded No. 2 in 4AA. Vance received a 14 seed in 4A and a return trip to No. 3 seed Charlotte Catholic. Catholic beat Vance in the 4A semifinals a year ago, stopping the Cougars on a 2-point conversion attempt -- the way Hough beat Vance last week.

Lake Norman (8-3) at Independence (7-4), 7:30

Until allowing 31 points to Butler last week, Independence’s defense had been playing lights out, allowing but 41 points in five weeks. If the Patriots want to reach the second round of the playoffs for the fifth straight year, they will need a quick return to form. Lake Norman has won three of its past four games and has averaged 51 points in the wins.

West Mecklenburg (5-6) at Hough (10-1), 7:30

West Mecklenburg stunned Hough 45-10 in 2012, the last time the teams met in the postseason. This year, West Meck enters the playoffs having lost two of its past three games. Hough, which won its first outright conference championship, has won six straight. The Huskies haven’t lost since Sept. 18, when they fell 35-3 at Butler.

Regional contest

North Mecklenburg (7-4) at West Forsyth (8-3), 7:30

North Meck goes for the school’s seventh playoff win. The Vikings are in the postseason for the first time in six seasons but have lost two straight. North will play its fourth road game in five weeks. West Forsyth has won seven of its past eight.
