Charlotte Catholic beats Vance in 2nd overtime

Charlotte Catholic went from the brink of elimination to exhilaration on one kick.

When Vance missed the extra point in the first overtime of their N.C. 4A playoff game, Catholic’s Cougars turned the reprieve into Jaret Anderson’s 3-yard run for the winning touchdown in a 26-20 victory Friday at Keffer Stadium. The double-overtime victory was Catholic’s second in as many postseasons against Vance.

“There was no let up from either team,” said Anderson, who finished with 25 carries for 97 yards and three scores. “It was just like last year – all the emotions, everything was on the line, down to the wire again.”

Vance’s Cougars, who finished 6-6, rallied after falling behind 14-0 in the second quarter behind the running and passing of Kingsley Ifedi, who hit 18-of-32 passes for 176 yards, including a 5-yard strike to Myles Dorn with 22 seconds in regulation to force overtime. Ifedi’s 12-yard dart to Dorn in overtime tied the score at 20 and put Vance in position to pull off the upset. He also had 46-yard pass to brother Jonathan that trimmed the deficit to seven points in the third quarter.

“What do you do?” Vance coach Aaron Brand asked. “That’s the story of my season, the story of my luck. I thought we fought back and put them in a good situation and were able to win it with a kick from the 2-yard line. We just underachieved. We didn’t get it done.”

Catholic didn’t miss its opportunity to make good after Vance missed a 28-yard field goal on its second overtime possession. Anderson carried the ball three times, finally crashing across the goal line for the game-clincher.

Catholic struck first when Anderson scored on a 2-yard run after Greyson Krone recovered a botched Vance snap. Anderson, who rushed for 54 yards on 12 carries, also scored on a 1-yard run to account for the 14-point bulge. Catholic accounted for 98 yards, including 70 on the ground, but didn’t have to go nearly as far because of superior field position provided by punter Connor Demaine, who twice pinned Vance inside the 10.

Vance managed 133 yards on offense, but couldn’t move into scoring position. Kingsley Ifedi completed 8-of-15 passes 75 yards, but Catholic’s defenders seldom let Vance’s receivers get behind them for long runs after the catch.

Quote: “It’s just another classic game with Vance. Catholic and Vance have played twice now and it’s come down to the last play of the game and of course double-overtime.” – Charlotte Catholic coach Mike Brodowicz.

Records: Vance is 6-5; Charlotte Catholic is 10-0.
