Basketball Roundup: Concord First Assembly edges Rocky River

<z_sym_arrow_up>Raquan Brown, Rocky River; Myles Pierre, Carmel Christian: Pair of freshman guards had coming out parties at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge Friday: Brown had 22 points in a loss to Concord First Assembly. Pierre had 29 points, 10 rebounds in a loss to Grace Christian (TN).

Kentucky recruit Bam Adebayo: Adebayo and his nationally ranked High Point Christian team will play Providence Day Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Myers Park in the finale of the Charlotte Hoops Challenge. The game will feature 15 Division I recruits.

Ty Baumgardner, Collins Hill (GA): Successful homecoming for the former Olympic High coach. Baumgardner led Collins Hill to a 73-52 win over Olympic at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge Friday. Baumgardner led the Trojans to a 30-0 record and N.C. 4A state title in 2013, when his team finished the year ranked as high as No. 5 nationally.

Kennedy Boyd, Providence Day girls: 15 points, zero turnovers in 60-41 win over Northside Christian. Providence Day made 25-of-26 free throws.

Friday’s Charlotte Hoops Challenge Roundup

No. 7 Charlotte Christian girls 64, No. 3 Rocky River 48: The Knights improved to 4-0 and gave Rocky River its first loss of the season. Christian, which got 14 points from Payton Buell and 10 from Gerlea Patton, led by 10 points at halftime and never looked back. Ariana Nance had 11 and Tee Dorsey 10 for Rocky River.

Concord First Assembly 75, Rocky River 66: Senior Nico Payne had 11 points and 9 rebounds to help lead his team to the win. The Eagles (4-0) have won seven straight games dating to last season, including the 2015 N.C. Independent Schools 2A state title.

South Meck 67, Davidson Day 63: In a game that was close throughout, South Meck outscored Davidson Day by four in the final quarter to win. Khayleb Connelly had 23 for South Meck and Jalen Blakeney had 18.

South Meck girls 62, Central Cabarrus 43: Central Cabarrus’ Mehaley Holit had 21 points, but the Sabres won comfortably. Ali Fitch had 13 for South Meck. Fitch made four of her five three-point attempts.

Grace Christian (Tenn.) 75, Carmel Christian 69: Led by 21 points from freshman point guard C.J. Gettelfinger, Grace Christian earned a tight win. Gettelfinger’s father, Chris, played at Kentucky from 1977-81 and was on the Wildcats 1978 national championship team. Grace Christian outscored Carmel 38-29 in the middle two quarters. Raf Jenkins had 10 points, four assists and Jon Bryant 14 rebounds for Carmel.

The Burlington School 44, Victory Christian 28: Jordan Nelson and Trey Cousin had 11 each as Burlington coach Ron Johnson, a former Concord Cannon and Davidson Day coach, made a successful return home to the Charlotte-area.

Janelle Bailey, Providence Day girls: 21 points, 12 rebounds in 60-41 win over Northside Christian.

Tracus Chisholm, York Prep: Junior guard had 19 points, eight assists, four rebounds, two steals for York Prep (4-1) in a 84-62 win over Metrolina Christian (1-4). Jaron Williams (13 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks) and DJ Burns (13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists) also had big games.

Devon Dotson, Grant Williams, Providence Day: Dotson, a sophomore guard, had 23 points and five assists in a 84-66 upset of Raleigh Word of God, ranked No. 22 in USA Today’s national poll. Williams, a 6-foot-7 senior signed to Tennessee, had 24 points and 16 rebounds.

A’Lea Gilbert, South Meckenburg girls: The daughter of former Carolina Panther Sean Gilbert, A’Lea had 28 points, nine rebounds in a 62-43 win over Central Cabarrus.

Myles McGregor, Davidson Day: Presbyterian recruit had 38 points in a 67-63 loss to South Meck.

Jaylen McManus, North Meck: Game-high 20 points in 101-56 win over Mooresville in semifinals of Holden Classic. Vikings will play Lake Norman Charter Saturday night at 7:30 in the championship at North Meck.

Nenad Milenkovic, Concord First Assembly: 29 points, 10 rebounds in a 75-66 win over Rocky River.

Kerstie Phills, Charlotte Christian girls: 31 points in a 64-48 win over Rocky River.

Nick Worthy, Lake Norman Charter: 14 points, four rebounds, four assists, four steals in a 56-49 win over Community School of Davidson at Holden Classic at North Meck.
