HS Basketball Roundup: No. 5 Concord Robinson rallies to stop No. 3 Butler

↑Cristie Mitchell, Jermaine Walker: Mitchell, girls coach at South Meck, and Walker, boys coach at Rocky River, have gradually raised the profile of the Charlotte Hoops Challenge (CHC). Now in its sixth season, MaxPreps, a national high school site, recognized the CHC as one of the top events this week in the country.
↓Raleigh Word of God: No. 22 in USA Today’s preseason poll lost to Observer Sweet 16 No. 1 Providence Day 84-66 Friday and 50-42 to reigning N.C. Independent 1A state champ Burlington School Saturday.
↑Cam Hamilton, Vance: Junior guard, who is averaging 25 points per game, led Vance to a 72-67 win over West Forsyth Saturday in the Bobby Martin Classic. Hamilton had 33 points, six steals and five assists against West Forsyth.
↑Myers Park girls: Mustangs (3-0), No. 2 in the Sweet 16 and No. 25 in USA Today’s national poll, beat No. 5 Davidson Day 64-44 at Charlotte Hoops Challenge, winning their 92nd straight game against Mecklenburg County teams. In the past five seasons, Myers Park is 122-4.
↑Providence Day: Chargers beats USA Today No. 22 Raleigh Word of God Friday and No. 12 High Point Christian Saturday. Senior Grant Williams had 13 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks Saturday.
Saturday’s Boys Roundup
No. 2 North Mecklenburg 77, Lake Norman Charter 60: The Vikings won the Leroy Holden Classic at North Meck. The Vikings trailed 16-10 after the first quarter but outscored Lake Norman Charter 25-6 in the second quarter and 24-11 in the third to pull away. North Meck shot 55 percent from the field and limited Lake Norman Charter to 40 percent shooting. North’s Jaylen McManus had 17 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists. Derrick Maxwell and Davion Mintz had 15 points. Kendal Coles added 14.
No. 5 Concord Robinson 70, No. 3 Butler 69: Jordan McKenzie made two free throws in the final seconds to give Robinson a narrow win in a battle of two Observer Sweet 16 teams at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge. Robinson guard Lavar Batts, the top recruit in North Carolina’s 2017 class, had 23 points. Daniel Spencer added 19. Butler senior RaeQuan Scott had 22. Robinson trailed 55-45 after the third quarter.
No. 6 Berry 65, Metrolina Christian 49: Sophomore Jamarius Burton had 16 points to lead the Cardinals (5-0) to the easy win at Marvin Ridge’s holiday tournament. Metrolina Christian (1-5) lost its fifth straight game.
No. 11 Charlotte Catholic 60, Myers Park 58: Josh Brodowicz had a team-high 17 points, and 6-7 freshman center BJ Mack had 12 points and 9 rebounds as the Cougars fought off an upset bid from Myers Park, which got 11 from Henry Richards.
Hopewell 66, Grace Christian (TN) 56: Mark Sherrill, son of former J.C. Smith All-American Mark Sherrill, had 14 points to lead Hopewell (1-1). The Titans got 13 points from Josh Barnette and 10 each from John Jones, Robert Faison and Chris Lewis.
Collins Hill (GA) 61, Concord First Assembly 50: Collins Hill coach Ty Baumgardner, who coached 10 years at Olympic High in south Charlotte, had a successful homecoming, going 2-0 at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge. TeShaun Hightower had 18 points in the win for Collins Hill (3-0), ranked No. 7 in the Georgia Class 6A poll. First Assembly (3-1) got 15 points from Marquise Beasley and 14 from Nico Payne.
Saturday’s Girls Roundup
No. 1 Providence Day girls 65, No. 4 Ardrey Kell 39: Providence Day (4-0) took a 20-10 lead after the first quarter and went on to get a statement win over the Knights, a legitimate N.C. 4A public school state title contender. Kathleen Rogers led the Knights with 10 points.
No. 2 Myers Park girls 64, Davidson Day 44: Myers Park (3-0) ran out to a big early lead and won easy. Kentucky recruit Chanin Scott had 16 points, Kianna Funderburk had 12 and McKenna Haire had 10. Parker Tompkins had 19 for Davidson Day (1-1).
No. 6 Hopewell girls 42, Northside Christian 36: Kelsie Ruff-Mills had 11 points for Hopewell (3-0). Eleah Parker led Northside Christian with 13 points.
Community School of Davidson 37, Mooresville 30: Down 15-14 at halftime, Community School outscored Mooresville 23-15 in the second half behind 12 points from Karli Fekete to win in the consolation game at the Leroy Holden Classic at North Meck.
Saturday’s Top Performers
Bam Adebayo, Ty Graves, High Point Christian: Adebayo, a Kentucky signee, had 23 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks in a 76-66 loss to Providence Day. Graves, a Boston College signee, had 17 points, three assists.
Janelle Bailey, Providence Day: 26 points, five rebounds in a 65-39 win over Ardrey Kell.
Jairus Hamilton, Concord Cannon School: 6-8 sophomore had 21 points and 15 rebounds in a 49-37 win over Olympic at Charlotte Hoops Challenge.
Sha’Niya Lester, Courtney Lewis, North Mecklenburg girls: Combined for 29 points in a 58-47 win over Lake Norman Charter in the Holden Classic championship game. North Meck is 4-0.
Jordan McKenzie, Concord Robinson: Nine points, seven assists, four rebounds and four steals plus game-winning free throws in 70-69 win over Butler.
Issac Suffren, Myers Park: 6-3 sophomore made six 3-point shots and had 22 points in a 60-58 loss to Charlotte Catholic.
Trey Wertz, Devon Dotson, Providence Day: Sophomore backcourt combined for 40 points in High Point Christian upset. Wertz had a team-high 22 points, two assists and Dotson had 18 points, five assists. Dotson had no turnovers in two games.
Erin Whalen, Providence Day: 26 points, seven rebounds, seven assists in a 65-39 win over Ardrey Kell. Whalen is signed to Vanderbilt.
