Former United Faith High basketball player VJ King, a top 30 national recruit, will return to Charlotte Saturday for the Southeast National High School Boys Hoop Festival at Vance High.

That tournament is one of four in the immediate Charlotte area Saturday:

▪ At Hickory Ridge, the Best of the Carolinas Classic will feature eight girls’ teams, including Butler, Northside Christian and Concord First Assembly.

▪ At West Mecklenburg, the West Meck Girls’ Showcase will have three games beginning at 1: West Charlotte-Ashbrook; Berry-Garinger; and West Meck-Rocky River.

▪ At Ashbrook in Gastonia, the Holy Angels Hoops & Halos Classic will include private school powers Northside Christian and High Point Wesleyan. Northside will face Hunter Huss at 6, followed by Ashbrook-Wesleyan at 8.

The day’s biggest event is at Vance, where King’s Paul VI (Va.) team will play Raleigh Word of God at 7:30 in the finale. Word of God’s Rawle Alkins, a 6-foot-4 senior, is a national player of the year candidate. He and King are candidates for the McDonald’s All-America game.

King, who played for former coach Muggsy Bogues at United Faith before leaving Charlotte, is a 6-foot-7, 200-pound forward considered a five-star (out of five) national recruit. ESPN ranks King No. 27 among all seniors and No. 1 in Virginia.

King had offers from Arizona, Charlotte, Georgetown, Kentucky, Michigan State and Ohio State before signing with Louisville. King has won two gold medals with USA Basketball’s U16 and U17 teams.

In his season debut Tuesday, King had 31 points, eight rebounds and four assists in an 88-67 win for Paul VI over Chavez Charter of Washington, D.C. King made five 3-pointers.

▪ Other key games at Vance: Sweet 16 No. 5 West Charlotte vs. No. 8 Charlotte Catholic, noon; No. 5 Berry vs. Legacy Charter (S.C.), 6.
