For the first 27 minutes of no. 7 Butler’s Southwestern 4A clash against Myers Park there were 12 lead changes, 8 ties and neither team led by more than five points.
But Butler used an 11-0 run over one minute and eighteen seconds of game time to pull away from the visiting Mustangs for a 66-57 victory.
After Jonathan Hutto scored for Myers Park to close to 48-46 with 5:46 left in the fourth, Orlando Robinson hit a 3-pointer 26 seconds later to extend Butler’s lead to 51-46. Zane Rankin and Raequan Scott followed with 3-pointers 25 seconds apart. Then two Robinson free throws with 4:02 left extended the lead to 59-46.
Later, Myers Park closed to 61-53 with just over a minute to play on a 3-pointer by Zailan Peeler, but Butler made five of six free throws in the final minute and took the win.
Quote: “I expected this kind of tough game, Butler coach Myron Lowery said. I don’t’care about their record, Myers Park is a good, well-coached team. It was tight throughout but that stretch early in the fourth was obviously the difference.”
Records: Butler improves to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in the Southwestern 4A while Myers Park falls to 3-5 and 0-2.
Worth mentioning: Robinson led all scorers with 20 for Butler while Scott had 15 (on five 3-pointers and Rankin added 10. Peeler led Myers Park with 16 points and Davrion Grier scored 11 and Henry Richards added 8.
Butler really hurt Myers Park from the 3-point line, hitting 11 compared to six for the Mustangs.
In the girls game, no. 3 Myers Park (7-1, 2-0) defeated no. 14 Butler (6-3, 2-1) 62-49. Myers Park led by as many as 12 in the second half before Butler used an 8-0 run in the fourth to cut the lead to 48-45. But McKenna Haire hit a 3-pointer to stop the run and Myers Park held on. Haire and Chanin Scott each had 13 for Myers Park, while Fairen Sutton led all scorers with 21 for Butler.
What's Next: Butler will face Lancaster High in Rock Hill Friday while Myers Park will play at Mallard Creek Thursday.
