Coming into her senior year, South Iredell’s Julia Scoles expected to have a banner year on the volleyball court.

Scoles, the Charlotte Observer volleyball player of the year, helped lead her South Iredell team to 27-1 record and 3A state championship.

Scoles was also named the N.C. Gatorade player of the year and an Under Armour All-American.

The 3A state championship most valuable player had 503 kills, 122 aces and 290 digs on the season.

Covenant Day coach Heather Mills is the Charlotte Observer volleyball coach of the year after leading her Lions’ team (30-12) to their third straight NCISAA 3A state runner-up finish, falling to North Raleigh Christian 3-2 in the final.

Mills’ team got to the finals despite losing nine players from the 2014 squad.

All Charlotte Observer Volleyball Team

First Team

Julia Scoles, South Iredell, Sr.: University of North Carolina signee had another monster season with 503 kills and 122 aces, led Vikings to 3A state title.

Sarah Billiard, Covenant Day, Jr.: Virginia commit also played big role for her state runner-up team with 522 kills, 69 aces, 424 digs.

Taylor Rowland, Cox Mill, So.: Auburn commit is scoring machine with 539 kills.

Courtney Weber, Cox Mill, So.: University of South Carolina commit a major playmaker for the Chargers with 1,061 assists.

Emma Mitchell, Charlotte Catholic, Sr.: Alabama-Birmingham signee had a strong all-around season with 253 kills, 272 digs, 53 aces for 4A quarterfinalist team.

Jessica Kemp, Nation Ford, Sr.: N.C. State signee, all-state pick was a major force at 6-foot-4 with 480 kills, 58 blocks, 82 block assists.

Tessa Grubbs, Fort Mill, Sr.: University of Tennessee signee, all-state pick also has the size (6-foot-3) and talent to dominate with 440 kills.

Charissa Coleman, Covenant Day, Sr.: All-state libero was everywhere for her team with 588 digs, 50 aces, has multiple college volleyball offers/interest.

Taylor Berg, South Iredell, Sr.: Limestone College signee was all over the court for the Vikings with 514 digs.

Hannah Phillips, Jr./Isabelle Terblanche, Jr., Statesville Christian: All-state duo led the Lions to a perfect 25-0 season, NCISAA 1A state title.

Karlie Redfern, Cannon School, Jr.: All-state performer had 371 kills, while leading the Cougars to the NCISAA 3A state semifinals.

Lexi Mitchell, Providence Day, Jr.: All-state hitter did a little of everything for the Chargers with 425 kills, a school-record 76 aces, 258 digs.
