4 high school basketball tournaments set to tip off in Mecklenburg County
Observer-area teams will participate in more than 20 tournaments this week throughout the Southeast. Four of those tournaments are in Mecklenburg County.
▪ At Providence Day, the Hoodies House of Hope event returns. The Hoodies was at Ardrey Kell last season and was previously known as the Dell Curry Shootout, the Wild Wing Cafe tournament and the Bojangles’ Shootout.
In its 15-year run, the event has brought top-tier national talents such as WNBA MVP Maya Moore, NBA MVP Stephen Curry, NFL wide receiver Terrelle Pryor and other NBA talents, including Raymond Felton, Wayne Ellington, Gerald Henderson and Brandon Rush.
This year’s event features national powers Wheeler (Ga.), Norcross (Ga.) and defending champion John Carroll (Md.). North Carolina recruit Brandon Robinson is in the field playing for Douglas County (Ga.). Robinson is ranked among the nation’s top 70 players by ESPN.
▪ The first Queen City Holiday Classic is at Vance, with some proceeds going to cancer research. The field includes N.C. powers Arden Christ School and Raleigh Millbrook. Monday at 1:30 p.m., Columbia Ridge View (5-0), the No. 4-ranked team in South Carolina by MaxPreps, will face Millbrook (9-0), No. 4 overall in North Carolina.
▪ At Charlotte Latin, the Urban Building Group Invitational features high profile public school vs. private school matchups Monday: Charlotte Latin plays Providence at 1:30 p.m. and Myers Park faces Charlotte Country Day at 6.
Myers Park and Charlotte Country Day met for the first time in football last August at Memorial Stadium. Myers Park won 19-14.
