Providence Day tops Douglas County at Local Hoodies Hoops’ Tournament
The Providence Day Chargers continued their early-season schedule against the nation’s top teams and players Monday night in the day-one finale of the Hoodies National High School Hoops’ Tournament at Providence Day.
The Chargers squared off against the Douglas County ( Ga.) Tigers, who feature senior guard Brandon Robinson, who is headed to North Carolina to play for the Tar Heels. Providence Day started slowly but built an 11-point halftime lead and never looked back in winning 73-56.
The Chargers had four players in double figures, led by Devon Dotson’s 27. Grant Williams poured in 18 while Josh Howard and Try Wertz each finished with 11.
Douglas County opened up a 10-4 advantage in the first quarter, but Providence Day took the lead for the first time on a bucket by Johnson on the final play of the quarter. From that point the Chargers never relinguished the lead.
THREE WHO MATTERED
Devon Dotson: Providence Day sophomore guard went 16 of 19 from the free-throw line and led the Chargers with 27 points
Grant Williams: Finished with 18 points and was nearly unstoppable underneath.
Brandon Robinson: North Carolina commit led the Tigers and all scorers with 30 points.
WORTH MENTIONING
Providence Day, a usually high-percentage free-throw shooting team only went 15-26 in the first half. ... Hosted by Providence Day this year, the Hoodies tournament for the past 15 seasons has brought top-tier national talent to Charlotte. Ardrey Kell hosted the tournament last year.

“Devon did really well. They tried to get out and press us the entire game but he’s a hard kid to press. He does a great job splitting the traps and making plays off of that. He as able to attack, get to the rim, get to the line, did a great job and really opened it up for us.” Providence Day coach Brian Fields on Devon Dotson’s performance against Douglas County.

WHAT’S NEXT
Both teams will play a tournament game Tuesday in day two of the tournament. Providence Day will face Wheeler (GA) in the semifinals at 5:30. Douglas County will face Long Island Lutheran (NY) in a consolation game at 12:30 p.m.
