No. 7 Butler falls to bigger Jane Buchanan team from Kentucky
Throughout his team’s seven-game win streak, Butler boys’ basketball coach Myron Lowery worried that his team had been able to get away with some mistakes that would hurt the Bulldogs against stronger competition.
Lowery felt that came true in Tuesday’s 63-59 loss to June Buchanan (Ky.) at the Hoodies House regional round-robin tournament at Providence Day School. The Bulldogs (10-3) started slowly against a much bigger Crusaders team and trailed 29-15 at halftime. The Bulldogs were rushing shots and couldn’t get rebounds.
In the second half, Lowery moved out of a zone defense and used a full-court, man-to-man press. June Buchanan struggled mightily against the pressure and Butler got within 44-42 early in the fourth quarter after an Orlando Robinson layup.
But after that, Butler made just 5-of-19 shots. For the game, Butler attempted 30 more shots than June Buchanan (1-3) but made only 28 percent of them. Worse, Butler was outrebounded 46-31.
“We have had some moments when we’ve been good and others where we were just not playing very well,” Lowery said. “We beat some teams that we were just better than and got away with some mistakes, and I told them them they would show up later. They showed up today.”
Three Who Mattered
▪ Prince Anosike, June Buchanan: 12 points, 14 rebounds two assists and two blocks. Helped his team dominate the rebounding.
▪ Idris Akinyemi, June Buchanan: 14 points, 18 rebounds for the team’s other big man.
▪ RaeQuan Scott, Butler: Came off bench to made seven three-point shots and score 24 points.
Worth Mentioning
▪ June Buchanan point guard Steven Silvers made 5-of-6 3-point attempts and had 25 points and four assists.
▪ Butler’s Orlando Robinson had 14 points and four assists.
They Said It
“We had looks, but their bigs obviously bothered us a lot.” – Lowery.
