Charlotte Catholic second-year football coach Mike Brodowicz was named N.C. high school football coach of the year by USA Today Wednesday. The national newspaper named all-state teams for each state.

In his second year, Brodowicz led Catholic (15-0) to an unbeaten season and an N.C. 4A state title. He is 29-2 in two seasons with two state championship appearances.

USA Today named East Lincoln quarterback Chazz Surratt the state’s offensive player of the year. Surratt threw for 3,546 yards and 48 touchdowns. He ended his career as the state public school leader in total yards (16,590).

The Associated Press N.C. all-state team, also released this week, is voted on by a panel of N.C. media members and is different from the one named by USA Today. The AP team has long been considered the “official” all-state team for North Carolina.
